1950s Bulletins of San Jose State College

1950 A separate Department of Librarianship is established within the School of Education.

1954 A free-standing graduate program in library science is approved by San José State. Two degree programs are available: a four year program that includes a 1- year major leading to a credential in librarianship and a graduate program leading to the master’s degree. A 1.25 GPA is necessary to enroll in library courses.

1955 SLIS has 4 full-time faculty. The GPA requirement is raised to 2.25.

1957 San José State College celebrates its centennial with the motto “Pioneers for One Hundred Years.”

1959 Initial 2 master’s degrees in Library Science are awarded. The school also offers its first technology-based course using closed circuit TV.

Members of the Bibliophiles student group 

"Founded at San Jose State in 1930, the Bibliophiles is a professional club open to all librarianship majors and minors. Activities of this organization are conducting library tours for new students and working in neighboring libraries. "


Members of Alpha Beta Alpha

Alpha Beta Alpha, national library science fraternity, reported an active, interesting and diversified year. Some of their activities were a rummage sale, pledging, and initiation. Alpha Beta Alpha acted as hostess for the California Library Association's annual meeting held in San Jose. The girls also sent books to an American Indian School.
