News

Library Journal announced the 2014 Movers & Shakers award winners earlier this week. Of the 50 individuals recognized for “shaping the future of libraries,” four are alumni of the School of Library and Information Science at San José State University (SJSU).

With a moniker like “outreach black belt,” it’s no wonder alumna Madeline Walton-Hadlock (MLS 2006) is among the LJ “community builders” category winners. She currently works as a senior librarian at the San José Public Library in San José, Calif., where she leads outreach services, finding innovative ways to build connections with patrons and better serve community needs. One of her many accomplishments is spearheading the development of a smartphone app with eBay’s help for the summer reading program that is set to launch in the summer 2014. Read more.

Thanks to alumnus Henry Bankhead’s (MLIS 2003) marketing expertise, the Los Gatos Library in Los Gatos, Calif., is on the leading edge of incorporating digital publishing into libraries. As the town librarian, Bankhead helps aspiring writers to self-publish and make their work available through electronic library distributors. With a grant he recently received from the Pacific Library Partnership, he plans to fund two mobile self-publishing labs. Read more.

Alumna Cheryl Lee’s (MLIS 2006) marketing successes shone bright in her nomination for Library Journal’s 2014 Movers & Shakers. Lee is a community engagement /outreach librarian for the Palo Alto City Library in Palo Alto, Calif., where she rotates among the city’s five branches. According to her Movers & Shakers profile, Lee has developed parenting programs that have drawn 500-plus participants, among many other proud achievements. Read more.

Deemed a “tech leader” by Library Journal, alumna Tasha Bergson-Michelson (MLIS 2001) “revolutionizes how we think about teaching information literacy skills, encouraging us to tap into our tacit knowledge about the research process and find new ways to transform the previously unspoken into the teachable.” Bergson-Michelson is an instructional and programming librarian at the Castilleja School in Palo Alto, Calif. Previously, she was Google’s search educator, and in 2013, she talked about her job at Google during a career colloquium hosted by the SJSU information school. Bergson-Michelson is also a member of the school’s International Advisory Council. Read her Movers & Shakers profile.

According to Library Journal, the 2014 Movers & Shakers award winners were selected from more than 225 nominations. The winners will be honored at a luncheon during the American Library Association conference in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday, June 27, 2014. Congratulations to all the award winners!

Walton-Hadlock, Bankhead, Lee, and Bergson-Michelson are in good company, sharing bragging rights with several other LJ Movers & Shakers who’ve also earned a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science at the SJSU information school.
