Student Communication

Blackboard IM
Blackboard IM includes several communication tools, including text chat, voice and video chat, whiteboard, and application sharing. All actively enrolled students are required to install and set up Blackboard IM in order to provide a sense of community within classes. Students in a class are connected to each other and to their instructor. At the end of the class they may select to add specific students to their contacts list.

All classes have discussion forums. Most classes have mandatory group work and mandatory posting to forums.

Faculty Communication

Each student has a faculty advisor who responds to questions within 48 hours. Each student can communicate with their instructors via email and the D2L site.

All students have access to the Graduate Advisor. Students also have access to the Graduate Advisor who oversees the advising process and answers questions and deals with complaints. She also talks with prospective students.

In support of students the Graduate Advisor maintains two blogs and answers questions posted there.

Annual onsite two day Faculty Institute held in May in San Jose. SLIS pay for 90-100 faculty to attend to spend two days focusing on online learning and pedagogy in an online environment. The content is made available to all faculty via the D2L Learning Management System. In 2012 -2013 this will be supplemented by mini faculty training sessions throughout the year. Feedback is obtained and used to inform the following year’s institute. The importance of faculty student communication is stressed throughout.

Faculty expectations are part of Standard 4. Interaction and Collaboration of the SLIS Online Teaching Standards and Indicators. http://slisweb.sjsu.edu/downloads/SLIS_Online_Teaching_Standards.pdf
