MLIS Application Process
We will be open for special session admission for Spring 2013! We will accept your application for special session no matter where you live.
We normally offer access to the MLIS degree via regular session and special session; however, San Jose State University will not be admitting any regular session students for Spring 2013.
Regular session is state-supported and state-subsidized and is for students who live within the catchment area of San José (zip codes: 936xx - 96xxx). The cap on the number accepted is related to the amount of money received from the State.
Special session is totally funded from student fees and is for students who live outside the catchment area of San José (i.e., Southern California and the rest of the United States and the world.)
Special session fees are highly competitive, currently $474 per unit (the MLIS degree is 43 units) but subject to review and change. Special session students are not eligible for any kind of state financial aid, but may be eligible for federal funding aid and/or scholarships. For financial aid questions, please contact Carol Garcia, Phone: 408-924-6081). See scholarship information.
Both regular session and special session classes have the same instructors, the same assignments, the same content, the same timelines, and are delivered totally online. SLIS no longer offers any face-to-face classes.
If you are a CSU employee and interested in a fee waiver, please follow the four steps below:
- Step 1: Contact your campus fee waiver coordinator to determine if you are eligible for a CSU tuition fee waiver.
- Step 2: Apply as a regular session student [see application deadlines].
- Step 3: When you complete the online application state that you will pay the application fee by check/money order [do not pay by credit card]. If CSU tuition fee waiver eligible, you may receive an application fee waiver once verified.
- Step 4: Email Jessica Hernandez and Geeta Patel in Graduate Admissions & Program Evaluations to indicate that you have applied as a regular session MLIS student, and you are CSU tuition fee eligible. In the email, please include your name, CSU campus, and SJSU id number/application number.
