Troubleshooting Access Problems

Please review the SJSU SLIS Home Computing Requirements

  1. Web browsers (NOTE: These requirements may be subject to change by your instructor)
    • For PC: Internet Explorer v 7.0 is the SLIS recommended Web browser with cookies and JavaScript enabled for PC users.
    • For Mac: Safari is the SLIS recommended Web browser for Mac users.
    • Using Mozilla Firefox: Firefox can be used as an acceptable back-up browser for either PC or Mac. Please note, however, it is not compatible with MySJSU. For more information, see MySJSU's browser requirements page.
  2. If you are running the Windows operating system, have you installed all available Critical Updates for Windows? If not, learn more information and access instructions.
  3. Are you an AOL user?
  4. Are you a DSL or Cable-modem subscriber? If so, are you using a Broadband Router on your home network?
  5. If you are using a computer at your place of work, is it behind a firewall of any type?
  6. Are you running any type of personal firewall software on your home computer?
  7. Are you running any type of popup blocker software?
  8. You may be unknowingly running "spyware" programs on your computer. These programs sometimes cause problems when accessing online resources or services. It is recommended that ALL students who are experiencing problems. Learn more about spyware, and how to get rid of it.

  11. For students experiencing problems with Real Audio streaming lectures, get instructions on enabling UDP as the transport.
  12. If you are having problems Copying and Pasting text using the Firefox browser:
    • When you want to paste, if normal methods fail (Edit - paste, paste tool, or ctrl-v) use the two keys shift-insert:
      • Copy the text you want to paste.
      • Click in the text box into which you wish to paste.
      • Use the shift-insert key combination to insert your text.
    • Or, you can download and install the AllowClipboard Helper Firefox add-on
  13. Blackboard replaces all my quotation marks (" and ') with question marks (?)
    • This is not a Blackboard issue but a Microsoft Office Issue. The problem is that "smart quotes" is enabled in office.
    • To turn off smart quotes in Word:
      • Open Microsoft Office and select Tools Menu/AutoCorrect/
      • Change on BOTH the "AutoFormat" and "Auto Format as you Type" tabs by unchecking the "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes".
