Tips and Additional Resources

Whatever software template you choose, follow these quick tips to keep yourself on track to creating a professional, targeted, and customized job search tool that complements your added value to an employer.

1. Be concise - provide clear, direct information about yourself, your work and your professional achievements. Use only those sections that represent you and market your skills and abilities best.

2. Be organized - your e-portfolio should be easy to navigate and browse with the most important information available in the fewest possible clicks.  The links, graphics, sound, flash player, video components, etc. should all work properly. Test them before sending your e-portfolio URL to potential employers.

3. Tailor it – customize the content just as you would your resume to highlight the best of your abilities that speak to the job listing of the position you are seeking. Don’t include everything you have done. Ensure that your career e-portfolio reflects the most positive aspects of what you have done that would interest a potential employer.

4. Be professional - your e-portfolio is a professional extension of your resume and cover letter. Ensure that it is free of any grammatical or spelling errors. Keep it simple, clean, and easy to read. The background, fonts, color, and size and style of the text should be clear and easy to read.

5. Market it – include the web address of your e-portfolio on your resume, cover letter, in the footer of any e-mail that you send related to your job search, on your LinkedIn profile, on your networking card, etc.
