Mission of the School
The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) educates professionals and develops leaders who organize, manage and enable the effective use of information and ideas in order to contribute to the well-being of our communities.

Getting Launched
SLIS utilizes a networked learning environment called Blackboard for class communications, discussion, submitting assignments, and grade records.  You should enroll in our 200-11 Blackboard site between Monday 18 August and Monday 25 August. You will be required to use a password access code I will send to you via the MYSJSU e-mail Messaging system prior to 18 August.

The class begins on Monday 25 August.  Weekly sessions run from Mondays through Saturdays. And Saturdays at 5pm will be the due time for most of our assignements.

Course Description

This course is designed to explore the complex social, economic, historical, and technological developments that influence the impact of information on society, as well as the mission, values and ethics of information professionals.

Course Prerequisites
Complete LIBR 203: Online Social Networking: Technology and Tools
This is a mandatory 1 unit course that introduces students to the various e-learning tools used in the SLIS program, including Blackboard, Elluminate and Second Life. Course Requirements

Assignments

Most assignments are due on Saturdays and must be turned at 5 p.m. (Pacific).

Late submissions will sustain a 20% reduction of the total points possible for that assignment.

Incompletes
Students should avail themselves of the policy for uncompleted coursework on the School’s website under “Registration.” 

Dropping the Course
The last day to drop this course without an entry on your permanent record is
Friday 5 September 2008.

Grading Scale
The standard SJSU SLIS Grading Scale is utilized for all SLIS courses:

97-100 A
94-96 A-
91-93 B+
88-90 B
85-87 B-
82-84 C+
79-81 C
76-78 C-
73-75 D+
70-72 D
67-69 D-
Below 67 F

In order to provide consistent guidelines for assessment for graduate level work in the School, these terms are applied to letter grades:

Students are advised that it is their responsibility to maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0.
