Students must self-enroll in the Blackboard course which will become available on or before Friday, 1 June 2007. The code for access will be sent to all registered students by June 1, 2007 via MySJSU.
Course Description
This course will focus on helping you find, use, create, manage and promote blogs and rss feeds, whether you are using them to keep up to date yourself or to share information through your organization or to your larger community.
Course Prerequisites: LIBR 210
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, students should be familiar with finding and reading blogs, evaluating blog tools, and able to create and post to their own blogs. They will understand the different types of feed readers available and how to subscribe to, manage, and organize feeds. They will be familiar with a wide range of uses of blogs and rss for information professionals and understand how various libraries and other organizations are using these tools. They will be able to provide examples and justifications to their organization in support of using the tools as appropriate.
This section of LIBR 220 supports the following SLIS Core Competencies:
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of current information and communication technologies, and other related technologies, as they affect the resources and uses of libraries and other types of information providing entities
- Apply the fundamental principles of planning, management and marketing/advocacy;

We will be reading a variety of materials either posted to our Blackboard site, accessible on-line through the SJSU Library, or otherwise made available. Further references for these items will be available on Blackboard.
Course Requirements
Blackboard
The assignments and other information may be found on the course Blackboard site, which will become available on or before Friday, 1 June 2007. The access for code will be sent to all registered students by June 1, 2007 via MySJSU.
Daily participation on Blackboard is expected during the one-week duration of the course.
Course Format
This class will be online. It is very important that your computer meet the SLIS home computing requirements. You need a high-speed Internet connection.
Course Overview and Schedule
- 220-13 (special session) will run from 6/4-6/9
- 220-01 (regular session) will run from 6/18-6/23
The course will cover:
- Introduction/overview of blogs and RSS feeds
- How libraries and other information professionals are using them
- Finding and using blogs to obtain current information and exploring some blogs of value to information professionals
- Other things you can do with RSS (including feeds from search engines, online communities, library catalogs, etc.)
- An overview of blog platforms, tools and options
- Create, modify and post to a blog
- RSS aggregators and tools
- Other blog tools, search engines, and more
- Proposing, justifying, and marketing a blog to your organization
Course Assignments
The assignments and other information may be found on the course Blackboard site, which will become available on or before Friday, 1 June 2007.
You will be expected to participate actively in the Blackboard discussions -- new discussion items will be posted each day of the one-week course along with small daily assignments. You will be expected to create your own blog (instructions will be provided) and to comment on the blogs of your fellow-students. There will be a final written project worth 40 points which will be due within 2 weeks after the conclusion of the online course.
The final project will consist of a written paper and/or presentation and may include the creation of mock-up of a blog aimed at a specific audience. Details will be available in the Blackboard site.

Late Assignments
Late assignments will not be accepted without prior notification and approval of the instructor and with the understanding that there may be a decrease in the number of points earned for the assignment.
