COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will examine the issues involved in collecting, cataloging, and offering reference service, and managing a Judaica library collection. Goals are to understand the major subject disciplines of a Judaica library, recognize the bibliographic, reference, and electronic resources for each discipline, learn the sources of purchasing and gathering library resources, learn about the cataloging issues in Judaica and Hebraica, and understand management issues.

A strong subject knowledge of Judaica is helpful, but not required. All terminology will be translated into English, however, you will be expected to master many non-English terms. Knowledge of Hebrew, Yiddish, German, or other languages with significant numbers of Judaica titles is helpful. I will expect that you can handle non-English materials even if you do not know that language.

Prerequisites: LIBR 202, 204 and 210
