Students will be able to self-enroll in the Blackboard course site between August 22-26. You will need an access code which will be sent to all registered students on August 22, 2006 via MySJSU.
Course Description
Survey of information sources, information transfer processes, and research patterns in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, including use characteristics, interpersonal communication, and query analysis. Topics covered will include library instruction, library guides, virtual reference systems, management, and evaluation of reference services. In addition, the course will emphasize specific skills judged essential for effective reference practice: oral and written communication, working effectively with other people, analysis, creative problem solving, and assessment.
Designed for students who wish to work in larger public or academic libraries.
Course Prerequisites: LIBR 202, LIBR 210.
Course Objectives
Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should have:
- An understanding of the process of information seeking in the sciences, social sciences, and the humanities.
- Demonstrated the ability to produce a library guide in both printed and electronic format in consultation with a faculty member.
- Presented, as a team member, an effective interactive teaching and learning session on a specific electronic source.
- Developed an appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of virtual reference systems.
- Analyzed the effectiveness of electronic answering sources for statistical queries.
- Developed skills in evaluating reference service effectiveness.
LIBR 228 supports the following SLIS Core Competencies:
- use service concepts, principles and techniques that facilitate information access, relevance, and accuracy for individuals or groups of users;
- demonstrate oral and written communication skills necessary for group work, collaborations and professional level presentations;
- design training programs based on appropriate learning principles and theories.
In addition, this section supports the following SLIS Core Competencies:
- describe the fundamental concepts of information-seeking behaviors;
- recognize the social, cultural and economic dimensions of information use;
- evaluate programs and services on specified criteria;
- design, query and evaluate information retrieval systems.

Course Requirements
Class Meetings
10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturdays:
- August 26;
- September 30;
- November 18;
- December 2;
Location varies - see calendar detail.
Expectations
The instructor expects:
- Successfully completing assignments related to Course Objectives.
- Participation during class sessions, online, and on the class reflector.
- Use of basic HTML for student presentation pages.
- Reading assignments must be completed in advance of class session. Readings are provided through links in the course Calendar page and through readings on Reserve, first floor King Library.
- All papers must be typed, double spaced, with a font size of at least 12 points.
- Attending the four Saturday class sessions is essential.

Grading Scale
The standard SJSU SLIS Grading Scale is utilized for all SLIS courses:

Late Assignments
Late assignments will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor.
Grade Disputes
All disputes over grades must be presented to the instructor in writing.
Scholarly Conduct

As a SLIS student, it is particularly important that you properly cite your sources in assignments, as specified in class. Acts of dishonesty, including cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, and misrepresentation, violate the University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
