Use of Brochures - An Idea from Canada
I have had one that I designed a number of years ago for all Kindergarten parents that I give out at the Information night we have each year in early spring. I make sure that the parents know it comes from our school library, as it has both my name as well as the schools name and I also am
present that night to give out the brochures and explain the library program.
It has the 3 folds (though I did not do it on Claris - but will do so in the future) and highlights the importance of reading outloud to children and how to choose appropriate books. I recently updated it with some ideas from a discussion that this group had earlier this year on "Raising Readers".
The second brochure I have is used for open houses or teas etc. and features specifics on our school library program, where I stress the importance of information literacy and the role that the library plays in the achieving this at the school.
In my opinion it is vital to have a marketing plan as part of your overall goal in school libraries, especially in these times. When I teach a course at the University on school libraries, I encourage the
participants to design items like brochures, letterheads for library stationary, memos etc. But these should also be changed frequently to reflect the changes in your program, eg. emphasis on technology
