Textbooks | Course Requirements
Students must enroll themselves into the Blackboard course site as soon as possible, and no later than September 1, 2005.
You will be required to use a password access code which I will provide using the MySJSU Messaging system.
Course Description
A seminar designed to explore the role of the school library media teacher and the school library media program in the educational community. Emphasis will be on the creation of effective learning environment, involvement in the curriculum and teaching process, as well as philosophies of service and management. 3 units.
Course Objectives
- Students will know and understand the components of an effective library media program across a wide spectrum of programmatic and administrative topics.
- Students will be expected to translate that body of knowledge into a working plan of action for an actual library media program in an elementary or secondary school. The two major programmatic thrusts of this course are developing a program for reading and enhancing learning through technology.
- Students will be able to sort through and articulate practice as it reflects tradition in the field vs. the push into the future. One way this will begin to happen is through a thorough analysis of Information Power, 1998.
- Students will understand and begin to build the competencies designed by the State of California for school library media teachers and demonstrate these competencies through a portfolio that will satisfy both the state and SJSU.
This course supports the following SLIS objective:
Teaching students the major theories, important principles, and current practice in the following areas:
- The foundations of information services;
- The principles and practices of management as specifically applied to information environments;
- The application of diverse technologies to information management;
- One or more specialized aspects of information management; and
- Advocacy and leadership for citizen access to information and knowledge resources

- The Book Report, Linworth Publishing’s periodical for secondary school librarians, has online articles available on http://www.linworth.com/bookreport/ as well as in paper.
- Knowledge Quest is a perquisite for membership in the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). While some articles are available through Knowledge Quest on the Web (http://www.ala.org/aasl/kqweb), you should join AASL and get the complete journal.
- Library Talk is Linworth’s elementary periodical for school librarians and its web site is http://www.linworth.com/librarytalk.
- School Library Journal has more subscribers than its companion, Library Journal. Most school librarians try to subscribe to the paper copy with access to illustrations and other peripheral information. However, articles are available at http://slj.reviewsnews.com and you should check “Full List of Feature Articles.” You can also join their weekly news list.
- School Library Media Activities Monthly, a publication newly under the publication of Libraries Unlimited, is more for practice than for management information, but this journal has a new editor and that may be changing.
- School Library Media Research is the online research journal of the AASL and available only http://www.ala.org/aasl/SLMR/index.html. Articles here are refereed and are very useful if you need to site research results rather than the “glad tidings” found in most of the other journals.
- Teacher Librarian, formerly edited and published by SLIS Director Ken Haycock, is now co-edited by and SLIS Professor David Loertscher and Esther Rosenfeld, district-wide Coordinator of Library & Learning Resources for the Toronto District School Board. of Ontario, Canada, and published by Scarecrow Press.
Because school library media teachers are teachers, you may already be aware of these periodicals in Education, and they should be in the professional collection in your school library with their Contents pages shared with teachers.:
- Educational Leadership, the journal of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) has some articles available online http://www.ascd.org/pubs/el/elintro.html.
- Education Week’s and Teacher’s website is http://www.edweek.org, and you may register free for information from this organization.
- Learning and Leading with Technology, the journal of the International Society for Technology in Education (by their definition the largest teacher-based, nonprofit organization in the field of educational technology), also has a web site: http://www.iste.org/LL/30/4/index.cfm.

The communications part of this course will be conducted on Blackboard. Go to tigris.sjsu.edu and find this course and enroll yourself as soon as possible, and no later than September 1, 2005. You will be put into groups after the first class period.

Reasonable Accommodation of Disabilities
Students who need accommodation due to a disability must register with SJSU's Disability Resource Center (DRC) during the first three weeks of the semester. The Center will work with the students to determine the disability, document it, and determine the services and accommodations necessary for student success. Then, the DRC will contact the faculty member to determine the types of consideration necessary.
Students attending the Fullerton campus should first contact the Disability Resource Center in San José since they are SJSU students. The DRC will then direct the students to supporting resources on the Fullerton campus.
