The World Wide Web's importance as an information distribution channel continues to grow in ways that were not predicted ten years ago. At the same time that the reach of the Web grows, the skills needed to create a Web site are increasingly accessible to individuals.
In this course, we will cover the skills and technologies needed to design, build and manage an effective Web site. Through this process, we will find that the skills needed to build a Web site are the same skills that are needed to build any useful information resource. Knowledge of the information needs and information seeking behaviors of your target audience are the prerequisites to building any information resource. Also necessary is knowledge of the basic principles of the organization of information and of the techniques of the presentation and delivery of information. This course will rely heavily on the basic theories and practices of the field of library and information science to inform us in the design of a Web site.
The class will be presented both in person and online. The Greensheet describes the specific material we will cover and requirements for successful completion of the course. Note that there will generally be an exercise or assignment each week. Please read through the required technologies and competencies and understand the work and time commitment required for this class. The schedule and readings provide resources that will help you to understand the material we cover in class. Class assignments will be posted throughout the term.
