Course Overview

This class concentrates on XML. We will exam its relationship to (X)HTML, build XML pages, and study the use of XSLT stylesheets for formatting XML data. As part of our study of XSLT we will work with XPath; with filtering and querying; and with linking two or more XML files. We will also work with the DOM and JavaScript to enable us to pull specific pieces of information from XML files. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) will be studied as will serving XML files from the server.

Prerequisite
Libr 240 or equivalent experience

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course the student will have:

1. Learned the basics of XML
2. Developed XML Web interfaces using XSLT
3. Worked with advanced features of XSLT such as XPath, filtering and querying, and linking two or more files
4. Used the DOM and JavaScript to set up searching capabilities for an XML file or files
5. Worked with Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)

The course supports the following objectives from the School's Teaching goal:

Upon completion of the program the student will know and be able to identify the major theories and important principles as well as demonstrate current practice in:

• Information transfer;
• The application of diverse technology to information management.

Course Requirements

Blackboard
The course will be run via Blackboard and a restricted Web server. The access code for the Blackboard site will be sent to those enrolled in the class via the My.SJSU.edu messaging system on the 19th August. The Blackboard site will open for self-enrollment on the 21st August.

Assignments and Grading

Late assignments will not be accepted. If you have an illness (medical certificate supplied) or a family tragedy please contact the instructor.

An incomplete will not be awarded for the class.

Students who need accommodation due to a disability must register with SJSU's Disability Resource Center (DRC). The Center will work with the students to determine the disability, document it, and determine the services and accommodations necessary for student success. Then, the DRC will contact the faculty member to determine the types of consideration necessary. Students must register with the Center during the first three weeks of the semester.

Students attending the Fullerton campus should first contact the Disability Resource Center in San Jose since they are SJSU students. The DRC will then direct the students to supporting resources on the Fullerton campus.
