NOTE: These guidelines are the standard set of guidelines I used for LIBR 240. Please note the class directory address for LIBR 246 is: senna.sjsu.edu/pai/246f99/username, where "username" is your Wahoo login id.

As part of your coursework, you will need to make various projects available on the Web. We will be using a directory established on senna.sjsu.edu, SLIS' course-based web server. The following are some guidelines for managing your files in the class' directory:

1. Remember that your work is available for public viewing. That is, since we have no security to keep people out of this machine, you need to be aware that your work is publicly viewable by anyone who wants to view it (and knows how). At the very least, anyone who comes to the class web site will see the pointer to student work.

2. Manage the files in your directory (the one you created in class) according to the following scheme:

  • create a directory for each project/ assignment. At a minimum, you will have directories for your exercises, reviews and assignments.
  • create a page that provides access for each of the projects available in your directory. Call this page "welcome.html". The page I create for the class' work will look for the "welcome.html" file in your directory. I will use this file to access your coursework.
  • keep all of your .gifs and .jpegs in one directory - call the directory "images". We will discuss how to create "relative addresses" to get to these files.
  • I suggest that you set up a similar directory system on you home computer to do your work (a "mirrored" system).

3. Report any strangeness to me immediately. I hate to sound so paranoid, but I want to stress that this system is not very secure and accidents do happen.

4. Keep backup copies of all of your files; assume that senna can crash at any time and that your files may not be retrievable. Again, rather than paranoia, making backup copies is standard operating procedure in any computing environment.
