Course Description (SLIS Bulletin):

Theory and practice of bibliographic control including the study of representative cataloging using AACR2, machine-based representation using the MARC formats and other standards, and subject analysis and classification using LCSH, Dewey, and LCC with the principle forcus on monographic and serials literature.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the class, the student will be able to:
  • Have a basic understanding of the role of bibliographic control in the overall functioning of the library.
  • Create and edit a machine-readable cataloging (MARC)record for books, serials, media, and digital resources, according to the ANGLO-AMERICAN CATALOGUING RULES, 2002 Revision.
  • Apply the principles of authority work to the creation of bibliographic records.
  • Assign authorized subject headings according to the Library of congress subject Heading List (LCSH)and Sears List of Subject Headings (Sears).
  • Assign classification numbers according to the Library of Congress Classification and Dewey Decimal Classification scheme.
  • Assign a book number using the Library of Congress Cutter Table.

The Course Supports the Following SLIS Objectives:

Knowledge, identification and practice of major theories of information organizations in a computerized environment and the effects of organization on retrieval.

Course Structure:

The course will be a combination of lecture, discussion, and active learning with reading assignments and exercises. Students are required to attend all sessions. The first session will be a "Virtual" meeting in the Blackboard Virtual Classroom for two hours. The rest of the sessions will meet four Saturdays at San Diego Public Library Scripps Ranch Branch Library for eight hours each. Students are expected to complete the reading assignments before each class and participate in class discussion. All students will need to sign up on Blackboard for this course.

Evaluation:

Class assignments: Exercise 1-6 10 points each
Midterm (Take home) 10 points
Final Project:create cataloging records for resources of various formats 20 points
In-class Quiz 10 points
