MORE THAN 40 new federal educational resources have been added

to FREE, the website that makes hundreds of learning resources

from more than 40 federal agencies available -- & searchable --

in one place.

"Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition" describes

the University of Minnesota center, which supports programs of

research, training, development, & dissemination of information

related to second language teaching, learning, & assessment. The

site describes its Summer Institute for Teachers & its various

"Acid Rain Lesson Plan" is a series of 5 activities for grades 6-8.

The lessons include the pH concept, the definition of acid rain &

its measurement, & the sources of acid rain & methods for

"Astronomy Picture of the Day" shows a different image or

photograph of our universe every day, along with a brief

"Adeline Hornbek & the Homestead Act: A Colorado Success Story"

offers pictures & diagrams of her house & land near Colorado

Springs, & gives readings & suggested school assignments about

the famous abolitionist, human rights & women's rights activist,

orator, author, journalist, publisher, & social reformer. The site

consists of enlargeable images of items in the museum & archival

collections at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site at

"American Visionaries: Thomas Moran" shows paintings & sketches of

the noted American landscape painter. Moran's pencil & watercolor

field sketches & paintings captured the grandeur & documented the

extraordinary terrain & natural features of the Yellowstone region.

His artwork was presented to members of Congress by park proponents

& helped inspire Congress to establish the National Park System in

Historic Place" concentrates on the area south of the main business

district, where blacks lived in Chicago. The site shows photos &

"Curriculum-Based Education Programs" links educational programs to

over 50 national parks, monuments, & historic sites of the National

Park Service. Information at the sites includes background guides

"Destination Detroit: A National Register of Historic Places Travel

Itinerary" exhibits residential, recreational, commercial,

industrial, & religious locations to create an online tour of the

city. The itinerary features 39 properties in the National

"Electronic Rehab" is useful for those contemplating actual

rehabilitation of old places. It details the 10 Standards for

Rehabilitation developed by the Secretary of the Interior, & each

"First Lady to the World: Eleanor Roosevelt at Val-Kill" uses a

retreat she built on her husband's estate as a focus, & gives

"Fugitive from Labor Cases: Henry Garnett & Moses Honner"

a school constructed in 1923 in a rural area of northern Delaware,

limestone, & even patent medicines flowed through Kingston along

"The M'Clintock House: A Home to the Women's Rights Movement" is a

guide to a home in Waterloo, New York, where several early

abolitionists, women's rights advocates, & social reformers lived.

The site uses photos & drawings of the house as a beginning point

to lead into readings about the First Woman's Rights Convention in

nearby Seneca Falls in 1848. (NPS)

"Maps of Indian Territory, the Dawes Act, & Will Rogers' Enrollment

Case File" encourages students to study a variety of documents to

"Martin Van Buren's 'Return to the Soil'" uses Lindenwald, the home

the 8th President moved to after his term in office, to introduce a

discussion of Van Buren & his times. The site contains photos &

drawings of Lindenwald as well as discussions how Van Buren

interacted with other political leaders of the day, such as Andrew

Jackson & John C. Calhoun. The site offers questions & suggestions

"Old Courthouse in St. Louis" served not only as a house of

justice, but also as a public gathering place for pioneers planning

their westward trek across the plains. Its iron-framed dome was

the forerunner of many similar domes erected on government

buildings throughout the country. The site includes maps,

readings, photos, drawings, as well as a guide for doing a student

"Petersburg National Battlefield -- A Teacher's Resource Guide"

gives materials for different grade levels to prepare students for

field trips to the site of an important Civil War battle south of

"Petition Signed by Thomas A. Edison for Sunday Openings at the

World's Columbian Exposition" focuses on petitioning the federal

government, peaceably assembling, & exercising freedom of speech &

religion, all of which are protected by the First Amendment to the

"Photographs of Lewis Hine: Documentation of Child Labor"

encourages students to analyze dozens of photographs taken in the

early 1900s depicting working conditions for child laborers. (NARA)

documents concerning the attack itself, as well as research

questions for student papers. Special emphasis is given to the USS

"Thaw in the Cold War: Eisenhower & Khrushchev at Gettysburg" uses

the home of the 34th President to introduce a discussion of the

"When Rice Was King" concentrates on Georgetown County, South

Carolina, where rice, rather than cotton, was the principle

commercial product. The site includes maps, readings, photos,

"We Shall Overcome, Historic Places of the Civil Rights Movement --

A National Register of Historic Places Travel Itinerary" shows 41

churches, houses, & other properties related largely to the post-World

War II civil rights movement. (NPS)

"Whitman Mission National Historic Site -- The Learning Place"

gives a teaching guide about the mission of Marcus & Narcissa

Whitman at Waiilatpu, an important way station in the early days of

the Oregon Trail. The Whitmans labored to bring Christianity to

the Cayuse, but deep cultural differences & a measles epidemic led

to violence in which the Cayuse killed the Whitmans & 11 others in

November of 1847. The park preserves the mission site, a short

segment of the Oregon Trail, & the grave where the victims are

buried. (NPS)
