Course Description
This course surveys the theory and practice of designing user-centered interfaces in information systems and services. It includes theories of user information seeking, cognition, human-computer interaction, the design process, and application in information systems and the Internet. Emphasis is on the design and evaluation of interfaces.
Prerequisite: LIBR 202
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the principles of human cognition including memory, perception, and information processing;
- utilize interface design guidelines and principles to describe a user interface;
- design and implement an original prototype for a targeted group of users;
- describe a target user group for purposes of interface design;
- evaluate interfaces for information systems and services;
- develop diagrams (e.g. UML models) for design of an information system;
- perform a task analysis for user interface design; and
- perform simple and complex evaluations of information systems
LIBR 251 supports the following SLIS Core Competencies:
- design, query and evaluate information retrieval systems;
- understand the system of standards and methods used to control and create information structures and apply basic principles involved in the organization and representation of knowledge;
- demonstrate proficiency in the use of current information and communication technologies, and other related technologies, as they affect the resources and uses of libraries and other types of information providing entities.

Calendar
A course calendar/schedule will be posted as part of the syllabus on the class Blackboard site.
Assignments
This course uses the design of an original prototype as a teaching tool. You should begin now to think about your prototype.
Full assignment descriptions will be posted as part of the syllabus on the class Blackboard site. Grades will be determined based on the assignments below.
| Assignment | Due | Value |
| User Profile | June 11 | 10% |
| Task Models (via Blackboard) | June 18-22 | 10% |
| Task Description | July 9 | 20% |
| State Transition Diagram | July 16 | 10% |
| Interface Evaluation (via Blackboard) | July 18-23 | 10% |
| Completed Prototype | August 6 | 40% |
Late Assignments
Late Assignments will not be accepted.
Written Format
All written assignments must conform to APA style. For additional information, see the SLIS APA Style Resources page. Unless otherwise instructed, please use one-inch margins, a 10-, 11- or 12-point font, and double spacing. Number each page, and include your last name in the header or footer.
Submission Requirements
All students must
- use MS Word unless otherwise instructed
- use the following scheme to name files: Last Name, Assignment;
- submit assignments by 11:59 p.m. of the due date;
- submit assignments via the Assignment Manager; and
- submit no more than one document for each assignment. If you send an assignment in two or more parts, only one document will be reviewed and graded.
Students will be notified when assignments have not been received
Grading Scale
Final grades will be based on the following grading scale:
