Course Description
This course develops the role of records management as an adjunct to, and diversification of, library and information management skills. Records management is concerned with the life cycle of a record from creation until ultimate destruction or retention in an archive.
Course Prerequisites:
None, although completion of all core classes is highly recommended.
Course Objectives
At the completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- complete a records inventory
- classify documents in a variety of schemes
- understand and use a records retention schedule
- discuss current issues in records management including enterprise content management, electronic records such as instant messages and e-mail, RFID and information security
- manage a records department
- provide records management services.
This course teaches students the major theories, important principles, and current practice in information/records/knowledge management. This prepares the student to meet these Core Competencies: design, query and evaluate information retrieval systems; understand the system of standards and methods used to control and create information structures and apply basic principles involved in the organization and representation of knowledge; and, use service concepts, principles and techniques that facilitate information access, relevance, and accuracy for individuals of groups of users.

Grading
Grading criteria include: Following directions and asking questions in a timely fashion, completing all work on time and at an acceptable graduate level, showing evidence in your work of critical thinking skills and learning (integrating reading, prior knowledge, and new information). No Incompletes will be given except for devastating illness or circumstances late in the semester.
Grading Scale
Final grades will be based on the following grading scale established for graduate students by San José State University:
