Good Web Sites to Find Biographies

• ALA publishes guides to biographical web sites in their 700+ Great Sites list.

• To find short biographical sketches of over 20,000 people past and present, check A&E's Biography Database (a commercial site)

• To find even shorter biographical information linked to books for purchase from Barnes & Noble about the person, try Biographical Dictionary.

• For in-depth searching for materials about multicultural individuals, try the Ethnic Studies at USC.

Books - General Sources

• Reference Book: Biography Today: Profiles of People of Interest to Young Readers. Omnigraphics, Annual. Compilation of biographies containing a sketch, picture, and other resources to check. A mini-Current Biography with an easier reading level.

British Royal Family

• The official web site includes gossip, official announcements, history, and candid pictures.

American Presidents and First Ladies

• The White House web site contains a great deal of information about current government plus biographical sketches of all the American presidents and their wives.

• The Internet Public Library's POTUS site is a collection of information about United States Presidents. It includes election results, cabinet members, and other presidential facts.

Authors for Teens

Book: Ehrlich, Amy, ed. When I Was Your Age: Original Stories About Growing Up. Candlewick Press, 1996. Short biographical stories written by Mary Pope Osborne, Laurence Yep, James Howe, Katherine Paterson, Walter Dean Myuers, Susan Cooper, Nicholasa Mohr, Reeve Lindbergh, Avi, Francesca Lia Block.

Book: Hipple, Ted, ed. Writers for Young Adults. Scribner's, 1997. - A three-volume set containing biographical sketches, sources, and writings of authors such as Avi, Jan Bennet, Francesca Lia Block, Judy Blume, etc. Expensive but good.

Book: Drew, Bernard A. The 100 Most Popular Young Adult Authors: Biogrphical Sketches and Bibliographies. Libraries Unlimited, 1996. Interesting sketches plus writings and sources for further information.
