The access code for the Blackboard site will be sent to those enrolled in this course via the MySJSU messaging system on May 24th. The Blackboard site will be open for self-enrollment on that date.
Course Description
Study of collection management in all types of libraries and information centers. Includes analysis of information needs, criteria for selection, collection use evaluation, and resources for collection development/management.
Prerequisites and Expectations: LIBR 202, 204
Each student must realize that 15 weeks of study are being compressed into 11 weeks and each student is expected to do the same amount of work and study as in a regular semester.

This course supports the following SLIS Core Competencies
- Recognize the social, cultural, and economic dimensions of information use.
- Use the basic concepts and principles related to the creation, evaluation, selection, acquisition, preservation and organization of specific items or collections of information.
- Apply the fundamental principles of planning, management, and marketing/ advocacy

Course Requirements
Course Format This course takes place entirely on the Blackboard site. Lecture notes, supplemental readings (if any), and discussion topics will be detailed on Blackboard.

Grading Policy
Everyone begins this course with a grade of “B”, the standard grade for graduate level work. If you do the assignments as outlined, you will maintain that “B”. If you submit sub-standard work, you will receive a substandard grade (B- or below). If you submit above standard work, you will receive an above-standard grade (B+ or better). Above standard work is defined as work that clearly displays one or more of the following criteria.
- Originality in the approach to the assignment
- Greater depth of analysis than the assignment calls for
- Overall treatment of the assignment above and beyond what the assignment calls for
- Superior organizational, written, or communication skills in the presentation of the material
Grading
Each assignment will receive the following number of points.

Assignments Overview
Class participation will be determined using such criteria as contributions to discussions, exercises, and activities on the Blackboard site. Written assignments must be in Microsoft Word and sent to the instructor via the Digital Drop Box. Assignments must be edited by the student for grammar, spelling, and syntax and be of graduate level quality. Late assignments will not be accepted without prior notification and approval of the instructor, and with the understanding that there may be a reduction in the number of points earned for the assignment.
Grading Scale
The final grade will be the total of points and the comparable letter grades based on a scale, which reflects the University Recommended Grading Scale for Graduate Students.

Incompletes
Incompletes will not be given in this class except in the case of substantial medical need or personal/family tragedy.
