Course Description
Study of collection management in all types of libraries and information centers. Includes analysis of information needs, criteria for selection, collection use evaluation, and resources for collection management

Course Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to

  • Describe the theoretical and practical issues associated with the management of library collections
  • Identify the challenges of collection management facing information professionals in various types of libraries and information agencies
  • Evaluate issues regarding access to information resources
  • Create and evaluate collection policies

This course supports the following SLIS objective:

Upon completion of the program the student will know and be able to identify the major theories and important principles as well as demonstrate current practice in information management, including the selection, organization, storage, retrieval, dissemination, and utilization of information resources.

Required Text
Evans, G. Edward. Developing library and information center collections. 4th ed. Englewood, CO: Libraries Unlimited, 2000.

Additional readings will be found in the Blackboard site.

Course Requirements
The course will take place within the Blackboard courseware environment. There will be weekly questions posted to the discussion board, several short written assignments, and a final paper. More information on the assignments will be given within the course.

Discussion participation - 20 points.

Library description/needs assessment - 10 points

Pathfinder assignment - 20 points.
Selection and annotation of materials.

The grant proposal - 20 points
For a real or fictional collection, you will develop a proposal for funding a) a new area (subject or format) of the collection, or b) a digitization or preservation project

The term paper - 30 points
Research paper on trends in collection management
