Course Description

Survey course covering collection building and management issues for all types of libraries. Course examines information producers, criteria for selection, collection development policies, budgeting, acquisitions procedures, different media, and ongoing collection management issues.

Course Objectives

Students will:

• understand how to approach the world of information for the purpose of building a library collection;
• know the tools of the selection and acquisition processes;
• create a collection development policy for a segment of a library collection;
• identify patron base for a particular library; and,
• study ongoing collection management issues including evaluation, weeding, changing needs, space issues, and preservation.

This course supports the SLIS goals and objectives by providing an opportunity for students to:

• Learn major collection development theories and principles as well as
  current practice, including the selection of electronic materials.
• Utilize relevant collection analysis research studies to gain insight
  into current practice in collection development.

Evans, G. Edward. Developing library and information center collections. 4th ed. Greenwood, Colo.: Libraries Unlimited, 2000.

Additional readings as assigned in class.

Grading

Attendance is mandatory. Missing one class session will automatically lower your grade by one letter grade. Four course projects will be assigned and will count 20% each. Projects turned in late will have ten points subtracted from the final grade. Additional readings for the semester will count 20% for all of the readings.

Class dates and times

All class sessions will be on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a lunch break. Class will meet June 1, 22, July 13, and August 3, 2003.
