Course Description: Explores preparation for National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification process.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following:

1. Describe, analyze, and reflect on teaching and learning (reflective writing).
2. Act as a Critical Friend when reviewing the reflective writing of others.
3. Understand and analyze the NBPTS Library Media Standards in the context of the school library media program.
4. Prepare an action plan for NBPTS portfolio and assessment center preparation.
5. Apply theory to practice in the education, library science, and school library media professions in the context of NBPTS.


This course supports the following SLIS objectives:

  • Advocacy and leadership for citizen access to information and knowledge resources; and
  • Giving students the opportunity to take elective courses, practicums, and independent studies that prepare them to contribute to the work of the library and information professions.


Required Text

Required texts are the Library Media Standards, and the Portfolio Instructions for Library Media. The Standards can be purchased from NBPTS ($15), or they can be downloaded (66 pages), along with the Portfolio Instructions (221 pages).

Course Requirements

LIBR 281 will be using Blackboard for online discussions and submissions of assignments. The class will be available for student comment on July 9, and will remain available until the last assignment is due.

LIBR 281 is an intensive one-week course. There will be a reflective writing assignment each night, along with other possible assignments and readings. The Standards Analysis and Action Plan are due one week after the last day of class.
