This course is a face-to face intensive course to be held July 23-26, 2007 (9:00am-5:00pm) with emailed pre and post reading and writing assignments. This class will not be using Blackboard. . My SJSU will be utilized. You may contact the professor anytime through e-mail. Please be patient for your response. All emails are attempted to be answered within 48 hours.

Course Description

Development of interpersonal habits that are used by effective people in their personal and professional lives utilizing the video and lectured based Seven Habits of Highly Effective People course. This class focuses on personal and interpersonal levels of leadership and communication development. This class is an integrated, principle-centered approach for students interested in improving their interpersonal, communication and life skills. The interpersonal skills learned are for all aspects of life and not just for library employees and patrons. This class is thoughtful and introspective. Positive, constructive, and active class participation is expected and encouraged.

Prerequisites: None.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this course are for students to:

Explain the foundational principles that are the basis for the Seven Habits of Highly Successful People and also relate the principles to interpersonal communication.

Textbooks and Readings

The textbook, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, may be purchased at any bookstore and must be obtained by the beginning of the semester to be able to complete pre-semester written assignments. The 7 Habits Manual Collegiate Edition Kit will not be used until the first day of class. It must be purchased by July 23 and will be available at the Spartan Bookstore by that time.

Course Requirements

Assignments
Subject to change with fair notice:

  1. Write a draft Mission Statement: The draft will be written in class as an exercise on July 23. Completed copy is due at the July 26  class.
  2. Attendance is important due to the nature of the material and videos. The videos and instruction material are not available outside of class. Please be on time in consideration of your learning and others as well.
  3. Teach content to fellow classmates, co-workers, and/or family members.
  4. Submit seven (7) reflection assignments. Reflection assignments are due the Monday at midnight on the date listed below. Email to jcody@slis.sjsu.edu. The reflection assignment on each habit should be no more then two pages; double spaced. Reflections which are single spaced or are more then two pages with not be read. The content of the reflection assignments shall be about your personal learning and integrating experience, not those of others. Assignments must be word processed in 12 pt. Times Roman and utilize a one-inch margin all around. Per SLIS guidelines, all homework assignments must follow the APA (American Psychological Association) style manual. If you plan to utilize a word processing program other than Microsoft Word, please check with the instructor to discuss the file format.
  5. Complete 7 Habits Signature Program Contract  from July 2 – August 10
  6. Submit one paper regarding the entire learning experience (reading/ reflection assignments/ class time/ contract period) at the end of the semester. The content shall be about your personal learning and integrating experience, not those of others. It is expected to be in more depth then the reflection assignments completed at the beginning of the process. – The final paper is due August 10.
  7. Purchase, read and complete the exercises in 7 Habits Participant Manual, Collegiate Edition. Read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Warm-up Exercise
June 4-13: The warm up exercise will be emailed to you during this week of the semester. It is not due until the first class meeting day (July 23) and it will be used as a warm up exercise. Please take your time in thinking about the answers. The important part of this exercise is not the assignment itself, but the thought process you go through to create the answers.

Missed Classes
Missed class – 20 points deduction. Please be on time. Many of the exercises utilize partners and small groups and everyone is needed to be in attendance to begin.

Late Assignments
No credit for late assignments. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. NO EXCEPTIONS.
