This course is a face-to face intensive course to be held July 21-24, 2008 (9:00am-5:00pm) with e-mailed pre and post reading and writing assignments. This class will use the discussion area of Blackboard. My SJSU will also be utilized. Assignments will be e-mailed directly to the instructor. You may contact the professor anytime through e-mail. Please be patient for your response. All e-mails are attempted to be answered within 48 hours.
Course Description
Development of interpersonal habits that are used by effective people in their personal and professional lives utilizing the video and lectured based Seven Habits of Highly Effective People course. This class focuses on personal and interpersonal levels of leadership and communication development. This class is an integrated, principle-centered approach for students interested in improving their interpersonal communication and life skills. The interpersonal skills learned are for all aspects of life and not just for library employees and patrons. This class is thoughtful and introspective. Positive, constructive, and active class participation is expected and encouraged.
Prerequisites: None.
Course Objectives
The objectives of this course are for students to:
- Understand the “Power of Choice” and other foundational principles that form the building blocks of successful interpersonal communication and relationships.
- Understand that interpersonal skills and communication is an “inside out” approach or other wise known as “Private Victory.”
- Understand that developed skills such as empathic listening and “courage and consideration” are some of the skills successful communicators utilize also known as “Public Victory.”
Student Learning Outcomes
Explain the foundational principles that are the basis for the Seven Habits of Highly Successful People and also relate the principles to interpersonal communication.
- Describe the three habits of character that comprise the Private Victory and how they are applicable to interpersonal communication.
- Describe the three habits that are the outward expressions of character and the basis of the Public Victory and how they are applicable to interpersonal communication.
- Define and describe the seventh habit that renews and allows the individual to grow.
LIBR 286 supports the following SLIS Core Competencies:
- Demonstrate oral and written communication skills necessary for group work, collaborations and professional level presentations.
Textbooks and Readings
- The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Collegiate Edition Guidebook.
- Stephen R. Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Simon & Schuster, copyright 1989.
The textbook, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, may be purchased at any bookstore (new or used) and must be obtained by the beginning of the semester to be able to complete pre-semester written assignments. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Collegiate Edition Guidebook will not be used until the first day of class. It must be purchased by July 17 and will be available at the Spartan Bookstore.

Course Requirements
Assignments
Subject to change with fair notice:
- Write a draft Mission Statement: The draft will be written in class as an exercise on July 22. Completed copy is due at the July 24 class.
- Attendance is important due to the nature of the material and videos. The videos and instruction material are not available outside of class. Please be on time in consideration of your learning and others as well.
- Teach content to fellow classmates, co-workers, and/or family members.
- Submit two (2) reflection assignments. Reflection assignments are due the Monday at midnight on the date listed below. E-mail to jcody@slis.sjsu.edu. The reflection assignment on each habit should be 5-7 pages (no more than 7 pages); double spaced. Reflections which are single spaced or are more then 7 pages with not be read.
The content of the reflection assignments shall be about your personal learning and integrating experience, not those of others. Assignments must be word processed in 12 pt. Times Roman and utilize a one-inch margin all around. Per SLIS guidelines, all homework assignments must follow the APA (American Psychological Association) style manual. If you plan to utilize a word processing program other than Microsoft Word, please check with the instructor to discuss the file format. - Submit one paper regarding the entire learning experience (reading/ reflection assignments/ class time/ contract period) at the end of the semester and should be no more than 10 pages. The content shall be about your personal learning and integrating experience, not those of others. It is expected to be in more depth then the reflection assignments completed before the face-to-face class. The final paper is due August 4.
- Purchase, read and complete the exercises in 7 Habits of highly Effective People, Collegiate Edition Guidebook (don't need until July 17). Read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (need by June 2).
Warm-up Exercise
The warm up exercise questions below is not due until the first day of class (July 21) and will be used as the class Introduction exercise. Please take your time in thinking about the answers. The important part of this exercise is not the assignment itself, but the thought process you go through to create the answers. The questions are:
- Where would I really like to become more effective in my life (e.g., relationships, projects, goals that I’m working on)?
- What long-term contribution would I really like to make in my current role at work (school or home)?
- What is the most significant thing I could do in my work (school or home) that, if done consistently, would have the most positive impact?
- What is the most significant thing I could do in my personal life that, if done consistently, would have the most positive impact?

Missed Classes
Missed class – 20 points deduction. Please be on time. Many of the exercises utilize partners and small groups and everyone is needed to be in attendance to begin.
Late Assignments
No credit for late assignments. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Grading Scale
The standard SJSU SLIS Grading Scale is utilized for all SLIS courses:

In order to provide consistent guidelines for assessment for graduate level work in the School, these terms are applied to letter grades:
- C represents Adequate work; a grade of "C" counts for credit for the course;
- B represents Good work; a grade of "B" clearly meets the standards for graduate level work;
- A represents Exceptional work; a grade of "A" will be assigned for outstanding work only.
Students are advised that it is their responsibility to maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0.

Please take that week to think about what you have read before you move on. Reading the chapters all at once will be overwhelming and you will be doing your learning a disservice. Pace yourself and you’ll have fun in your summer too!
