Students will receive the access code by June 5 via MySJSU to self enroll on Blackboard for the course.
Course Description
The Practicum is a field-based learning experience that takes place in a public, academic, special library or other information-based organization. It allows the student to obtain work experience while pursuing stated educational objectives. It is designed to provide the student the opportunity to test theories and to practice skills learned in the student’s program.
The Practicum course is 2, 3 or 4 units, each unit equivalent to 45 hours of work.

Course Prerequisites
A student must have completed courses LIBR 200, LIBR 202, LIBR 203, and three (3) advanced courses (excluding LIBR 298), and be in good academic standing (3.0 GPA or above and no outstanding incompletes) to participate in the Practicum.
Student Learning Objectives
The student will have an opportunity to test theories of library and information science, and practice skills learned in the school program at a public, academic, special library or other information-based organization.
- The Teaching Goal
The student will learn how the principles and practices of management are specifically applied to an information environment, about organizational culture, and the professional concerns of a library or information-based organization. - The Research and Scholarship Goal
The student will have an opportunity to test information theory and methodology in a supervised fieldwork setting.
Textbooks
There is no required or recommended text.
Course Requirements
Blackboard
This is an online course, and students are required to enroll in Blackboard.
The student is required to enroll in Blackboard and participate in the online discussion of the internship.
Deliverable Products
The student is required to submit the following documents upon completion of the Practicum.
- Log: This is a record of daily activities and a reflection of what was learned, problems encountered, and questions generated.
- Self Evaluation form: This requires the student to compare the Practicum experience to theory and practice, as well as explore the Practicum’s strengths and weaknesses.
- Site Evaluation form: This allows the student to provide feedback on the Practicum site’s effectiveness in hosing a SLIS intern, and recommend its continuance or discontinuance.
- Site Supervisor’s Evaluation: The student is responsible for their site supervisor submitting this online form.
- Additional Requirements: The student may be required to submit supplemental materials such as written reports, bibliographies or reading lists, portfolios or samples of professional work upon request.
All required student forms must be submitted using Blackboard.
The Site Supervisor’s Evaluation is submitted via the Practicum course description online form.
Tentative Course Calendar
The Practicum must be completed within the semester; dates for submission of the required Practicum documents will be posted on Blackboard. With prior approval, a student may begin the Practicum up to 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.
Grading
This is a Credit/No Credit course. Incompletes are considered on a case-by-case basis, and are given for family or work emergency situations.
