  1. What is Blackboard IM?

Blackboard IM is an online communication and collaboration platform that includes a variety of tools, such as instant messaging, voice and video conferencing, whiteboard, and application sharing. Voice and video conferencing can be used to bring a richer dimension to online interactions between students. Whiteboard and application sharing can be used to enhance group brainstorming and collaborative content creation.

  2. What are the benefits of using Blackboard IM?

Blackboard IM is intended to further enrich the experience of online education by enhancing collaboration and interaction among students. Students are grouped by class enrollment (under the 'Classmates' tab), which allows students to easily identify and initiate communication with other students in their classes. Students are encouraged to use Blackboard IM to enhance online interaction and collaboration in settings where group-work is required.

  3. What is the difference between Blackboard IM and Blackboard Collaborate Web Conferencing (formerly known as Elluminate)?

Blackboard IM and Blackboard Collaborate Web Conferencing share many similar tools, including text chat, voice chat, whiteboard, and application sharing. However, Blackboard IM sessions cannot be recorded. For any sessions that require recording, Web Conferencing must be used. Conveniently, students may launch Web Conferencing sessions using the Conference button in Blackboard IM. Additional information on using this feature is available in the Blackboard IM User Guide in the chapter labeled "Using Web Conferencing."

Please note that Blackboard Collaborate Web Conferencing (formerly known as Elluminate) will continue to be the primary system used for class-related online synchronous sessions that are run by your instructor.

  4. I am a new student. How do I get access to Blackboard IM?

All students enrolled in LIBR 203 will receive access to Blackboard IM shortly after the start of LIBR 203. You will receive an email notification. The email notification will include instructions for setting up your Blackboard IM user account. Follow the instructions provided in the email. Information on obtaining technical support will be included in the email as well.

  5. I am a continuing student. How do I get access to Blackboard IM?

All continuing students should have received an email invitation from "no-reply@blackboard.com" which includes instructions for setting up a Blackboard IM user account. Information on obtaining technical support is also included in the email.

If you are a continuing student and you need to have a new invitation emailed to you, send a request to Gina Lee.

  6. The semester has begun but one of my courses is not showing up on the Classmates tab. What do I do?

This seems to be an occasional bug that users encounter. The following procedure should resolve the problem:
    1. Log into the Blackboard IM Web portal.
    2. Locate the Course Settings area at the bottom of the page. Underneath Course Participant, you should see a list of all the courses you are enrolled in for the current term. There will be a checkbox next to each course.
    3. Disable all of your courses by removing the checkmarks.
    4. Close the Blackboard IM client software. (On the Blackboard IM menu, select Exit).
    5. Go back to the Blackboard IM Web portal and re-enable all of your courses by placing checkmarks in the checkboxes.
    6. Launch the Blackboard IM client software and sign in. Check the Classmates tab and verify that your courses are now showing up.

  7. I have dropped a class, but it's still showing up on my Classmates tab. How do I remove it from the Classmates tab?

Please use the following procedure to remove the course in question from your Classmates tab:
    1. Close out of the Blackboard IM client software (Go to the Blackboard IM menu and select Exit).
    2. Log into the Blackboard IM Web portal.
    3. Locate the Course Settings area at the bottom of the page. Underneath Course Participant, you should see a list of all of your courses. There will be a checkbox next to each course.
    4. Locate the course in question and remove the checkmark for that course. (By doing this, the course will no longer show up for you on the Classmates tab, and you will be removed from the course listing in Blackboard IM.)

Please note: All official course drops must be completed in MySJSU. Changing your course settings in Blackboard IM will *IN NO WAY* change your enrollment in MySJSU.
    5. Re-launch the Blackboard IM client software and sign-in.
    6. Check the Classmates tab and verify that the course is no longer present.

  8. I disabled one of my course listings in Blackboard IM. I want to re-enable it now, but after I do so, it's still not showing up on the Classmates tab. How do I fix this?

This is similar to the issue mentioned in FAQ #6. The remedy is the same. Please follow the steps outlined in FAQ #6 and the problem should be corrected.

  9. I do not hear an audio alert when I receive a new instant message from someone on my Classmates list. I'm worried that I won't notice new instant messages that arrive. How do I make sure that I'll receive an audio alert when a new instant message arrives from a classmate?

By default, Blackboard IM only alerts you when someone on your Contacts list sends you a new instant message. However, you can easily change your alert preferences so that Blackboard IM will also alert you whenever a classmate sends you a new instant message. Please do the following:
    1. Click on the Blackboard IM menu and select Preferences, and then select Alerts.
    2. Under Alerts, locate the following preference (located at the very bottom of the Alerts screen): "Use alerts for my contacts only."
    3. By default, this preference will be enabled. Disable this preference by removing the checkmark, and then click OK to save your changes.

By doing this, you'll receive alerts whenever you receive a new instant message from anyone on your Classmates list or your Contacts list.

Note: In order to receive audio alerts, you'll also need to make sure that you've set up your speakers or headset correctly, and have adjusted the audio settings on your computer.

  10. I don't like some of the alert notifications that I'm receiving from Blackboard IM. Is there any way to customize my alerts?

Yes, you may customize your alert notifications:
    1. Click on the Blackboard IM menu and select Preferences, and then select Alerts.
    2. Under Alerts, you'll see two main sections: One labeled "When this happens," and the other labeled "Do this." These settings control your alert notifications.
    3. For each type of event listed under "When this happens," you may select which alerts you wish to receive for that event by enabling or disabling each option under "Do This."

  11. I need to install the Blackboard IM client software on a new or different computer. Where can I obtain the installer for Blackboard IM?
    1. The software installer is available for download through the Blackboard IM Web portal.
    2. Log into the Blackboard IM Web portal.
    3. After you log in, locate the download links on the right-hand side and click on the appropriate link for your platform.
