All Users

If you are unable to download the DB/Textworks software following the instructions below, you may have a copy of the installation file shipped to you on CD. You will need to contact Stanley Laufer and provide your physical mailing address.

Instructions for downloading and installing DB/TextWorks

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are running Windows Vista, start with step 1B.

  1. Choose option A or B depending on your OS:
    1. Click on the link immediately below to download DB/TextWorks 9.0.
      slisweb.sjsu.edu/courses/restricted/DBTextWorks9.exe
    2. Windows Vista users only: If you are running Windows Vista, you should be able to use the above installer (in step 1A), however you will need to perform the additional step of right-clicking on the downloaded file and selecting the option that says "Run as Administrator," otherwise you will receive errors when trying to run the installer.

Alternatively, you can also use the following installer which has been thoroughly tested under Windows Vista and is known to be compatible:
      slisweb.sjsu.edu/courses/restricted/DBTextWorks9v2.exe

IMPORTANT NOTE: You will most likely need to right click on the file and select "Run as Administrator" in order to successfully install the files.

  2. You will be prompted for the SJSU SLIS Username and Password. These are the same as those for restricted readings.
  3. Your browser should open "save as" dialog box and prompt you for a local directory on your hard-drive in which to save the file. Choose Desktop or a directory and click OK ( Be sure to remember what you chose.) If your browser does not automatically open a "save as" dialog, you may need to reconfigure your browser preferences for file-extension handling (helper applications/plug-ins, etc).
  4. Steps 1-3 downloaded the .exe file; you now need to install the software. Change directories to the directory in which the .exe file was saved.
  5. Depending on which file you downloaded, double-click on either DBTextWorks9_WithAbstract.exe or DBTextWorks9.exe. The installation files for Inmagic DBText 9.0 will self-extract to a temporary directory.
  6. Following extraction, the setup program for DB/TextWorks 9.0 will automatically run.
    • Setup will prompt for your name, company, and the serial number. Instructors will provide this serial number to you. DO NOT CALL INMAGIC!

Please note that in this case the serial number is not actually a number at all, but is in fact a password. Your instructor will provide you with the password that you will need to type into the Serial Number field.

    • The setup wizard will guide you through the installation process.
  7. Once the installation is finished, the DB/TextWorks program or the Guided Tour can be launched from Start/AllPrograms/Inmagic Applications.
    • Note: the Guided Tour is a tutorial provided by Inmagic. You do not need to do this tutorial unless your instructor suggests it since it covers many features not used in LIBR 202. If you choose to work through this tutorial, skip the portion of Exercise 4: Building & Editing a Textbase that deals with Importing sample3.dmp (the file is not present), and subsequent editing exercises related to that database.
