Using Inmagic DB/Textworks on MAC OS X
Intel-based Mac Users
For those with a Macbook, Macbook Pro, Mac Pro, and newer iMacs, you can use virtualization software such as Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion to install and run Windows XP or Windows Vista on your Mac as a “Virtual Machine” [VM].
About Virtual Machines [VM]
- VM software like Parallels Desktop costs around $80.
- You will need to buy a licensed copy of Windows XP or Vista.
- You might need to add additional memory (RAM) to your Mac (see below).
- NOTE: students can buy Windows Vista from the SJSU Bookstore at a discounted price of $80. You must go to the SJSU Bookstore (no online purchases) and present your Tower ID to receive the discounted price.
Memory Requirements For Macs With Virtual Machines
- The amount of memory required depends on the amount currently installed.
- RAM allocated to a virtual machine is used only when that VM runs.
- When a VM is not running, the memory is released back to Mac OS X.
- It is recommended that 512MB of RAM is dedicated to each VM.
- For overall performance, it is recommended that your Mac have at least 1GB – 2GB of RAM.
- NOTE: Windows XP may run with as little as 256MB for a VM. This is discouraged.
Dual OS Macs With “Boot Camp” Software
- Intel-based Macs can use Boot Camp software to run Windows XP or Vista.
- Unlike VM software, which allows you to run the Mac OS X and Windows simultaneously, Boot Camp runs one at a time.
- This option saves money as virtualization software is unnecessary.
- Additional (RAM) memory may or may not be required with this option.
- A licensed copy of Windows XP or Vista is still required for this option
- Apple provides some guidance at the following URL: www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
- NOTE: Boot Camp is still in beta as of 9/11/2007. The final version is scheduled for release as part of Mac OS X version 10.5 (Leopard) in October 2007.
Virus & Malware Dangers
- Macs with Windows are vulnerable to virus/malware infection like any Windows PC.
- You will need to take the same types of precautions that Windows users do.
- It is strongly recommended that you obtain and install anti-virus software under Windows for either the VM or Boot Camp options.
Short Term Laptop Rental
- Students with access to the SJSU campus can rent a Windows laptop through the Associated Students Laptop Rental program: as.sjsu.edu/ascsc/index.jsp?val=csc_lrp.
- After renting a laptop from Associated Students, install DB/TextWorks, and then use the laptop to complete your assignments.
- Students who are not located near SJSU may wish to consider investigating whether there are any companies in their area that offer laptop rental services.
Borrow A PC From Friends, Family, or at Work
- Some students obtain access to a PC through work, friends, or family.
- They then use that PC to complete their Libr 202 assignments.
