SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Settings for POP and IMAP
Overview
SLIS no longer supports regular, unencrypted POP and IMAP access. Instead, support is only offered for secure, encrypted versions of POP and IMAP via SSL (Secure Sockets Layer).
Please note that all newer versions of common e-mail clients (such as Outlook, Eudora, and Entourage) support SSL-based POP and IMAP connections.
For your convenience, instructions for configuring SSL settings in several common e-mail clients are included below.
If your particular e-mail client is not included in #4 below, please consult your product manual or help system for more information on where SSL-related settings are located.
Relaying Outbound Mail for POP and IMAP users
All POP and IMAP users will need to use the SMTP services provided through their ISP for outgoing mail.
Please check your ISP's support Web site in order to obtain more information on the SMTP servers your ISP has made available to you.
Then, in your e-mail client, locate the setting or preference labeled "SMTP Server" or "Outgoing Mail" or "Outbound Mail", and enter the fully-qualified domain name (such as: smtp.earthlink.net) for your ISP's SMTP server.
NOTE: Be sure to check your ISP's support Web site for any additional instructions specific to your ISP.
Alternatives
If either of the above is a major inconvenience to you, then we would recommend that you use the SLIS Webmail system instead at http://slis.sjsu.edu
