Computing Environment

Instructions for Downloading RealPlayer

The latest version as of August 15, 2008, is version 11 for both Windows and Mac OS X.

  1. Go to the following URL: www.real.com link goes to non-SJSU web site (opens in new window)
  2. Locate and click on a button labeled "Get RealPlayer 11 Free" or "Free Download."

    CAUTION: Do NOT click on a link or button labeled "14-day free trial", "SuperPass", or "RealPlayer Plus": Those are not the free version.

  3. Work through the download process.

    1. Windows users:

      1. When prompted with a popup box that asks "Do you want to run this file?", click on the "Run" button. (Some browsers may require you to first save the file and then run it from the location it was downloaded to.)
      2. When prompted with a popup box that asks "Do you want to run this software?", click on the "Run" button.
    2. Mac users:

      You will be presented with the heading "RealPlayer 11 for Mac OS X - Free Download".

      1. Click on the "Free Download" button. This will take you to a page that has various download servers (web sites).
      2. Click on "Download" button on the server nearest to your location.
      3. If you are prompted with "Would you like to save this file?" (Depends on your browser set up), click the "Save File" or "Continue" button.
      4. Locate the file you downloaded which should end in '.dmg' (disk image). Double-click on the file.
      5. Open the "RealPlayer Disk Image" and drag the file "RealPlayer" to your applications folder or where everyou wish to put it. If you have a previous version installed, you will get a prompt to confirm you want to replace it.
  4. Work through the installation process.

    1. Windows users:

      1. RealPlayer Setup will automatically start. Accept the license agreement.
      2. You will be presented with an Options screen. Go with the checked defaults if you are unsure.
      3. Click the Next button.
      4. You will be asked to close your browser. Close it and click "OK"
      5. When installation completes, you will get a screen with "Finish" at the bottom. You may also get a screen with the option to "Make RealPlayer your Universal Media Player" (use this default if you are unsure) or "Select media types for RealPlayer from a list". If you have downloaded RealPlayer in the past the final screens may differ slightly.
      6. Click on "Finish" and RealPlayer will start.
    2. Mac Users:

      1. Double-click the RealPlayer application to start the installation process. This will uncompress the file and mount a disk icon on your desk called "RealPlayer Disk Image."
      2. Open the disk image and drag the RealPlayer application icon to your applications folder or whatever folder you want to keep it.
      3. Double-click on the RealPlayer icon to start RealPlayer and to finish the installation process. It will prompt for the media types it should play. Leave it on the defaults unless you understand why you would change this. It may also prompt you to close your browser so that it can update the link to the new RealPlayer. If you have done everything correctly, it will display a RealPlayer window with a short introduction.
