Academic Probation and Disqualification
Requirement
Graduate students are required to maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher in order to remain in good standing and to graduate. The overall GPA is different from a semester GPA. The overall GPA is your cumulative GPA that you earn starting from the first semester as a graduate student at SJSU. It is the GPA that takes into account the GPA earned for all previous semesters. The semester GPA is your GPA that is calculated on a semester-by-semester basis.
Academic Probation
If a student is currently in good standing, and at the end of a semester their overall GPA falls below 3.0, they will be placed on "Academic Probation." A status of Academic Probation indicates that the student is not performing to minimum graduate GPA standards and is at risk of being disqualified from the university. Students on Academic Probation will have a hold placed on their academic records. An academic hold will preclude students from registering for future classes. To remove this hold, a student must obtain Probation Advising from their academic advisor in order to remove the hold and to allow the student to register for classes.
Once on Academic Probation, students must earn a semester GPA of greater than 3.0 in order to bring the overall GPA toward 3.0 or higher, and in order to avoid being disqualified form the university. For example, if a student is already on Academic Probation and they earn a semester GPA of 3.0 or lower, they will be disqualified from the university. If they earn a semester GPA of greater than 3.0 but it is still not sufficient to raise their overall GPA to 3.0 or higher, then the status of the student will change to "Continued Probation." Students will remain on Continued Probation as long as their overall GPA remains below 3.0 but each semester GPA is greater than 3.0.
If at any point their semester GPA is 3.0 or lower while the student is on Academic Probation/Continued Probation, they will be disqualified. If the semester GPA is sufficient to bring the overall GPA to 3.0 or high, then the student will be removed from Probation/Continued Probation, and the student will be returned to a status of good standing.
Disqualification
Once a student is disqualified, they are no longer officially a matriculated student in the university. Disqualified students will be precluded from registering for future SJSU graduate courses either through regular or special session, or through Open University.
To be reinstated into a SJSU program, a disqualified student should read the following from the SJSU Web site: info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/catalog/rec-2204.html (opens in new window).
Once they have decided on possible classes they must complete and submit a Reinstatement Petition: reinstatement_form.pdf [PDF]. Note: the student must complete two 100-level courses with a grade of B or better.
The Reinstatement Petition should be submitted to the SLIS Graduate Advisor (not the former academic advisor).
If the student is reinstated, they may be placed on Probation/Continued Probation depending on their overall GPA as a result of completing the specified 100-level courses.
