Grades
At the end of each semester, instructors have one to two weeks to complete and file grade rosters. Admissions and Records then processes the grades. This procedure takes at least two weeks. Check MySJSU (opens in new window) and the SLIS Calendar for dates of when grades will become available.
SJSU does not mail grades. You must check for your grades online.
Academic Standards
See the SJSU Catalog - Graduate and Postbaccalaureate Information and click on the "Graduate Academic Standards" link for information on minimum GPA, academic probation, University disqualification, and reinstatement.
Also see Academic Probation and Disqualification and the Graduate Studies site.
Accessing Grades
Grades are posted on the my.sjsu.edu site. Information on using the my.sjsu.edu site is available at www.sjsu.edu/depts/cms/mysjsu/students/student_selfservice/index.shtml.
NOTE: It is strictly against University policy for the SLIS Office to give out student grades. The SLIS Office will not give out grades over the phone, e-mail, or in-person. Instructors may choose to personally notify students of their grades.
Grade Verification
Though the SLIS Office cannot give out grades via phone, e-mail, or in-person, the Office will honor e-mail requests for course completions/grade verifications for students who need letters for work-reimbursement purposes. Students who do not need a verification letter for work purposes should not abuse this service.
Students who do need letters to present to their employers can submit e-mail requests to the SLIS Office. To expedite processing, please put the words "VERIFICATION LETTER REQUEST" in the subject line of the e-mail.
Be sure to include the following:
- Full name
- Student ID Number
- Courses
- Semester Taken
- Location of Courses
- Address or Fax Number where letter is to be sent
RD: Report Delayed
On occasion, students accessing their records may find an RD recorded for a course grade. RD simply means Report Delayed. This is merely a place holder that Admissions and Records assigns when an instructor as not yet turned in a grade roster. Once the grade roster is turned in, Admissions and Records enters the grades. An RD has no negative effect on students’ transcripts and is only a temporary place holder.
Credit/No Credit
SLIS offers several Credit/No Credit courses, including internship or practicum courses, special studies, field work, and culminating experience. SLIS students may have no more than 15 units worth of Credit/No Credit coursework as part of their total 43 units for the MLIS degree.
Courses that are set up as letter-graded courses may not be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis.
Grade Appeals
Read the SLIS memo on grievance categories and process steps: Student Appeal Process [PDF].
See the University's policy on grade appeals (Student Fairness Dispute Resolution, section IV): www.sjsu.edu/senate/S07-6.htm.
Transcripts
