Adding and Dropping Classes
Students need to pay careful attention to Add and Drop deadlines each semester. These dates are posted on the SJSU Registrar Calendar.
Open Registration
Before classes actually begin, students add and drop classes using the MySJSU web site at my.sjsu.edu/. No permission codes are needed during this "open registration" period. For more information and for dates, read our SLIS Registration Process.
Late Registration
Late Registration begins on the first official day of the semester. Late Registration ends on different dates for adds and drops. These dates are posted on the SJSU Registrar Calendar.
To add a class after open registration ends
You must obtain a permission number from the instructor. Instructors may choose not to accept new students once the semester has begun. If the instructor does give permission and e-mails you a permission code, use the MySJSU web site to add the class. A tutorial at my.sjsu.edu/docs/sa/self_service_student/BPG_SR_SS_Add_Classes.pdf [PDF] explains how to add a class using a permission code. The deadline for adding a class in this manner is the 14th business day of instruction in any semester.
To drop a class in the first two weeks of the semester
You drop a class until the drop date by using the SJSU MySJSU web site. A tutorial at http://my.sjsu.edu/students/student_tutorials/QR_SR_SS_Drop_Class/index.htm explains how to drop a class on the MySJSU web site.
To drop a class after the first two weeks of the semester
The deadline for dropping a class (without a "W") is posted on the SJSU Registration Calendar. After that date, a grade of "W" will be recorded for a dropped class and you must show serious and compelling circumstances for dropping the course. Please read the current Petition for Course Drop form carefully. Current Petition for Course drop forms can be found on the Academic Advising & Retention Services Forms page.
IMPORTANT: Save the form pdf and send it to SLIS using the following email form: Email: Student Services Coordinator. SLIS will obtain signatures. You do not obtain signatures.
Refund Policy
Late Adds and Late Drops incur penalty fees. The amount of the penalty fee will depend on how far into the semester the student attempts to add or drop a course. The longer a student waits to drop a course, the greater the risk is that student will receive little or no refund. There are different refund guidelines depending on whether you are in Special Session or Regular Session.
Regular Session Refunds: See the SJSU refund policy.
Special Session Refunds: See the Special Session web site for their Refund Table or phone (408) 924-2670 for refund policy information. If you are eligible to apply for a refund, fill out the Financial Petition Form [PDF].
If you have questions, please contact Amanda at the SJSU Bursar's Office at (408) 924-1617.
Withdrawal
If you decide not to attend and are already enrolled in classes, be sure to drop those classes before you leave. If you do not drop classes, you will receive a grade of "WU" which later turns into a grade of "F."
Withdrawals after the second week of instruction are approved only for serious and compelling reasons. Please read the following carefully.
For special session students:
- Petition for Withdrawal Spring 2012 version [PDF].
- Petition for Course Drop Spring 2012 version [PDF].
For regular session students:
IMPORTANT: Save the pdf and send as an attachment by using the web-based form: Email: Student Services Coordinator. SLIS will obtain signatures. You do not obtain signatures. Include your personal statement and supporting documents.
