Adding and Dropping Classes
Students need to pay careful attention to Add and Drop deadlines each semester. These dates are posted on the SLIS Calendar.
Adding and dropping may be done on the SJSU MySJSU site. See also the section on late add/drop.
Dropping Classes
Students can drop classes by logging onto the SJSU MySJSU site and completing the drop process online. This process must be done during one of the following: Priority Registration Period, the Open enrollment period, or the Schedule Adjustment Period.
Steps for Dropping a Class in the MySJSU Site
- SA Self Service
- Learner Services
- Academics
- Enroll in a Class
- [select the semester]
- Drop Classes (bottom of the page)
- Select Enrollment Action
Adding Classes
To add a class after the semester begins, you must obtain a permission number from the instructor. The deadline for adding a class is the 14th day of instruction in any semester. However, instructors may choose not to accept new students once the semester has begun.
Late Adds and Drops
Students who miss deadlines and need to do a late add or drop for a course will need to use the the following forms. There are different forms depending on whether you are in Special Session or Regular Session.
The deadline for adding or dropping a class (without a W) is the 14th day of instruction in any semester. After that date, a grade of W will be recorded for a dropped class unless there are serious and compelling documented circumstances.

All Registration/Drop and financial petition forms for the specific semester can be accessed at the SJSU Special Session web site. Below are direct links to several forms on their site.
Note: The registration/drop form must be signed by the course instructor. SLIS Special Session only: FAX both the late registration/drop form and the late drop petition form to Scharlee Phillips at 408-924-2476. She will get instructor signatures and forward them to CASA.

Refund Policy
Usually Late Adds and Late Drops incur penalty fees. The amount of the penalty fee will depend on how far into the semester the student attempts to add or drop a course. For REGULAR SESSION students, see the SJSU refund policy. SPECIAL SESSION students should check the Special Session web site or phone (408) 924-2670 for refund policy information. If you are elligible to apply for a refund, fill out the Financial Petition Form [PDF]. (This link goes to the SJSU bursar's site.)
If you have questions please contact either the San Jose or Fullerton SLIS offices.
The longer a student waits to drop a course, the greater the risk is that student will receive little or no refund. All students need to pay attention to deadlines posted on slisadmin.
Withdrawal
Regular Session students should submit the Withdrawal from the Semester form [PDF] if you must withdraw.
Special Session students should submit the "Office of International and Extended Studies Late Drop Petition" for Special Session [PDF] and the "Special Session Registration/Drop" form (for the appropriate semester).
See special session forms (above) for the correct forms. Special Session students, please fax these forms to Scharlee Phillips at (408) 924-2676.
Withdrawals after the fourth week of instruction are approved only for serious and compelling reasons.
If you decide not to attend and are already enrolled in classes, be sure to drop those classes before you leave. Otherwise, you will receive a grade of "U" which turns into a grade of "F." If this happens you need to fill out a Retroactive Course Drop form.
