REGULAR AND SPECIAL SESSION
- What is the difference between a "Regular Session" student and a "Special Session" student?
Funding. Regular session is state supported and state subsidized and is for students who live within the catchment area of San José. The cap on the number accepted is related to the amount of money received from the state.
Special session is totally funded from student fees.
Note: Both Special Session and Regular Session schedules have only online classes.
Regardless of where you attend classes, you are a student of San José State University.

How can I find out about prerequisites?
See course descriptions. Can I take all my classes via the Web?
Yes.If a class has mandatory Elluminate meetings must I attend all the meetings?
Yes.I've done a search for open classes on MySJSU. I have located an open class that I want to register for, but it is asking me for a permission number. How do I obtain a permission number?
An open class that asks for a permission number is a special class that has been reserved for the Executive MLIS cohort program. General SLIS students are not eligible for a cohort class and no permission will be given out. What if I move to San José or from San José and I need to switch sessions?
The office staff must make the request to have you moved to the alternate session. Please contact Scharlee Phillips. Why am I blocked from registration?
Some common causes:- Cashiering hold: Non–payment of tuition for previous semester
You must clear up the debt to the University prior to registering. Call Cashiering at 408–924–1631. - Admissions hold: You are unable to register until all final admission documents have been submitted. For information, call 408–283–7500.
- Probation Hold: Contact your advisor
- Dropped from the University: You did not register for classes for two semesters in a row (excluding summer) and did not file a leave of absence request.
See: Semester Leave
- Contact the Student Services Coordinator Scharlee Phillips.
PAYMENTS, FEES, PURGING
- Cashiering hold: Non–payment of tuition for previous semester
What will my tuition be?
See information about fees on the following page: slisweb.sjsu.edu/admissions/fees.htmWhy were the classes purged that I had just registered for?
When the fees are not paid on time, courses are purged (you are un–enrolled from your classes). You will be notified at the time you register regarding your fees and deadline for payment. Look in the "Finances" section on your MySJSU Student Center Web page for this notification. You will not receive a bill in the mail. If you have questions regarding your billing, please call the Bursar's office at 408–924–1614.Now that I have registered for my classes, what happens next? Do I need to purchase any books for my course? Is there an orientation session? Where and when do we first meet? What are my assignments?
Your instructor is responsible for getting class information to you. Close to the beginning of the semester, they will post class information on their syllabus and on their ANGEL class site. Regularly check these places for information:- The course Web pages for your class section (see slisweb.sjsu.edu/classes/courses.htm, Current Students/Web Pages). The instructor will say on the syllabus/greensheet when they plan to open their ANGEL site for the class, what their required textbook(s) are, meeting times and places, assignments, and other information.
- Check your MySJSU Student Center Web page in my.sjsu.edu regularly for messages. Instructors will send their students a password to the class ANGEL site via my.sjsu.edu.
How can I find out about required or recommended textbooks?
You can find out which textbooks are required and/or recommended by your instructor by checking Textbooks by Semester. Textbooks will be listed approximately 6 weeks before classes begin.Does signing up for a class on ANGEL register me in the class?
No. Signing up on ANGEL does NOT register you in the class. You must register for the class following the university registration procedures. ANGEL is merely the tool selected by the instructor for delivery of content. If the instructor of a course for which you've registered chooses to use ANGEL for a class, you must self–enroll for that course on the SLIS ANGEL site.MISCELLANEOUS
