Frequently Asked Questions

What are the fees?

Executive MLIS students are classified as special session students. Fees for Executive MLIS courses through special session are $647 per unit, or $27,821 for the degree.

Housing costs during residencies will be in addition to tuition.

Do I need to come to San José?

Yes, once for one onsite residencyies. The first summer residency lasts three weeks8 days in early August of your first year. Two additional in-person seminars will take place in conjunction with ALA and SLA Conferences. The first in-person seminar will occur the summer following your first year of classes, and the second in-person seminar will occur the summer following your second year of classes.

See: Program Structure and note either online learning, residency, or seminar beside classes.

Can you tell me more about the two seminars?

Both seminars are planned to facilitate networking between students and instructors and to expand networking opportunities to allow students to interact with professionals attending the American Library Association (ALA) annual conference one year and the Special Libraries Association (SLA) annual conference the following year. Educational seminars will be planned by faculty so that students can take advantage of conference sessions. Pre-conference and post-conference assignments and readings will be required for students to earn one credit for each seminar.

Why is the program not totally online?

Much of the program is online. However the instructors feel that students in this program greatly benefit from face to face time with each other and with the faculty. Remember that while the degree is an MLIS, the focus of each class has a management orientation. The development of some of the management skills is improved by face to face time.
