Graduation Ceremonies: Spring 2008 Information

General Information

Diploma and gown photo Graduates from August 2007, December 2007 and May 2008 are invited to participate in the SLIS Convocation ceremonies.

There are three graduation activities:

SJSU Commencement - (May 24, 2008) held at SJSU Spartan Stadium for all graduates (undergraduate and graduate students).
SLIS Convocation (2 graduation activites)
a) in San José — May 17, 2008
b) in Fullerton — May 18, 2008
This is the event where your name is called and you can walk across the stage. (Official diplomas are mailed 2 to 3 months after this event.)

SLIS graduates are welcome at both the SJSU and the SLIS events.

Graduates must wear a cap, gown, and hood (though you don't wear the hood until you are officially hooded during the ceremony). These will be available for sale through the campus bookstore (or you may be able to borrow one from a friend and then purchase only your tassel). MLIS graduates should purchase the lemon colored hood. The SJSU Spartan Bookstore will be selling regalia from April to May. Students may make purchases in the bookstore or online. Announcements are also available through the bookstore.

SJSU Commencement

SJSU Commencement will be on May 24, 2008. Parking in campus parking garages that day will be free.

SJSU Commencement is held at Spartan Stadium. All graduates, including distance students, are invited to attend. Students who attend the morning ceremony will be able to collect a program from their chairs. The program lists all the SJSU graduates including those in our program. Degree recipients who do not attend the ceremony may obtain a free program beginning the week following Commencement at the President's Office (Tower Hall 206). SLIS Convocations

For both SLIS Convocation ceremonies — San José and Fullerton — business casual attire is encouraged for both students and guests.

Stephen Abram will be Commencement Speaker

April 17 update: Stephen Abram, vice president of Innovation and Chief Strategist at SirsiDynix, will be our commencement speaker this year. Stephen Abram is the current president of the SLA. Abram has over 24 years experience as a practicing librarian and in the information industry. He was named by Library Journal in 2002 as one of the key people who are influencing the future of libraries and librarianship. He was also the highly popular Lazerow Lecturer for SLIS in 2006. Abram is a past president of the Canadian Library Association, Fellow of the SLA and in 2003 was awarded SLA's highest honor, the John Cotton Dana Award.

General Information

There is a $25 processing fee for all graduates. Your first two guest tickets are free. Each additional ticket is $20, children under 12 are $10. Graduates do not need a ticket. There is NO LIMIT to the number of tickets you may purchase. Tickets will be sold at the door at $25 for each adult or at $10 for each child under 12. Tickets may be purchased in advance by downloading the PDF forms below or at the SLIS Office. Children under 18 months may also attend, free of charge.

You must do step 1 and step 2 below even if you are not going to invite guests. Everyone must pay the $25 processing fee.

SLIS Convocation in San José

The SLIS Convocation will be held in San José on May 17th, at Parkside Hall. It will start at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow the ceremonies.

Parking is available at the Convention Center for a fee. Alternative parking is available across from the Convention Center. There is free parking in the Market & San Salvador lot at 325 S. Market St. See www.sjdowntownparking.com/parking_map.php (opens in new window). Please be aware parking meters are enforced on Saturdays.

Graduates should arrive between noon and 12:30 p.m. to check in and begin lining up. All graduating students must check in at the ticket sales table. The processional will begin at 1:00 p.m. The ceremony should last about an hour and a half. The reception begins after the ceremony and will end at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Convocation photos will be taken by Bob Knight Photographers. Everyone will be photographed. You will receive an information card to complete on convocation day. GradTrak^TM allows graduates to receive their proofs via email within 24 hours after the end of the ceremony.

No helium balloons will be admitted into the graduation auditorium or the reception hall.

SLIS Convocation in Fullerton

The SLIS Convocation will be held in Fullerton on May 18th, in the Little Theater at CSUF. The Little Theater is in the Performing Arts building. It will start at 3:00 p.m. A catered reception will follow the ceremonies.

The Little Theater is located in the southeast corner of the Performing Arts building (PA on the CSUF Campus Map) at California State University at Fullerton.

Graduates should arrive between 2:00 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. to check in and begin lining up. All graduating students must check in at the registration table. Families and guests are encouraged to enter the auditorium at this time to avoid congestion in the processional area. The processional will begin at 3:00 p.m. The ceremony should last about an hour and a half. The reception begins after the ceremony and will end at 5:30 p.m.
