Graduation Ceremonies: Spring 2009 Information

General Information

Diploma and gown photo There are two graduation activities:

  1. SJSU Commencement – (May 23, 2009) held at SJSU Spartan Stadium for all graduates (undergraduate and graduate students)
  2. SLIS Convocation in San José – May 16, 2009

Graduates from August 2008, December 2008 and May 2009 are invited to participate in the SLIS Convocation ceremony either in person or virtually. The names of all graduates will be called.

SJSU Commencement

SJSU Commencement will be on May 23, 2009. Parking in campus parking garages that day will be free.

SJSU Commencement is held at Spartan Stadium. All graduates, including distance students, are invited to attend. Students who attend the morning ceremony will be able to collect a program from their chairs. The program lists all the SJSU graduates including those in our program. Degree recipients who do not attend the ceremony may obtain a free program beginning the week following Commencement at the President's Office (Tower Hall 206). SLIS Convocation

Business casual attire is encouraged for both students and guests.

Commencement Speaker — Keith Michael Fiels

Keith Michael Fiels was appointed Executive Director of the American Library Association in July 2002. Keith Fiels earned a B.A. and an MLS from the State University of New York, Buffalo and did advanced studies at the University of Denver. Prior to coming to ALA, Fiels served as Director of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Fiels has served as President of the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA), as the director of a library network, and as a staff consultant for the New York and New Jersey State Libraries. He is the recipient of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) Leadership Achievement Award and a Library Public Relations Council Award. He was named to the ALA Association for Library Trustees and Advocates (ALTA) National Advocacy Honor Roll in 2002 and the Massachusetts Library Association Hall of Fame in 2004.

General Information

Graduates do not need a ticket. Your first (1) guest ticket is $10. Each additional ticket is $25, children under 12 are $10. There is NO LIMIT to the number of tickets you may purchase. Tickets will be sold at the door, $30 for each adult and $15 for each child under 12. Tickets may be purchased in advance online at our SLIS Store. Children under 18 months may also attend, free of charge.

You must do step 1 and step 2 below. Step 3 is optional.

  1. RSVP for the San José convocations before April 28, 2009. (closed)
  2. Convocation Program Book form. (closed)
  3. Purchase tickets for your guest at the SJSU SLIS online store.

    Starting on May 7th, all tickets purchased online will be available for pick–up at "Will Call" only!

    **Please Note: The $10 "Discount Ticket" will not be available at the door.

NOTE: We accept American Express, MasterCard and Visa online. Sorry, we cannot accept debit cards.

SLIS Convocation in San José

The SLIS Convocation will be held in San José on May 16th, at Parkside Hall. It will start at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow the ceremony.

Parking is available at the Convention Center for a fee. Alternative parking is available across from the Convention Center. There is free parking in the Market & San Salvador lot at 325 S. Market St. See www.sjdowntownparking.com/parking_map.phplink outside www.sjsu.edu. Please be aware parking meters are enforced on Saturdays.

Graduates should arrive between noon and 12:30 p.m. to check in and begin lining up. All graduating students must check in at the ticket sales table. The processional will begin at 1:00 p.m. The ceremony should last about an hour and a half. The reception begins after the ceremony and will end at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Photographs

Convocation photos will be taken by Bob Knight Photographers. Everyone will be photographed. You will receive an information card to complete on convocation day. GradTrakTM allows graduates to receive their proofs via email within 24 hours after the end of the ceremony.

No helium balloons will be admitted into the graduation auditorium or the reception hall.
