Become familiar with the SLIS web site (http://slisweb.sjsu.edu). In particular, look over the "The Master's Degree in
Archives and Records Administration (MARA)" and "Current Student" sections as they contain a lot of information that you will need to know while you are in SLIS.

Subscribe to Slisadmin (and other lists, if desired). SLIS faculty and staff email important announcements and last–minute administrative changes to current students through slisadmin. If you aren’t subscribed to slisadmin, you will miss these critical announcements, so we require that you subscribe to this electronic list. |

Sign up for an ANGEL account after May 10 using the Request an ANGEL account form. SLIS instructors and students use this online course software (Learning Management System) for class lectures, assignments, resources, discussions, etc. You will receive your account information within 7-10 days. In the meantime, you can view ANGEL tutorial video tours and a sample ANGEL class. |

Class Registration and Tuition Payment. Since this is a cohort program, you do not need to register for your classes. SLIS will place you in your classes automatically. We will also send you a message on MySJSU to let you know when you have been added to your classes.
You will need to monitor the "Finances" section of your MySJSU Student Center page in order to pay your tuition fees on time. Please note that the tuition payment deadline may be as short as two days after you are registered for your classes.
If you decide not to start your classes in Fall 2010, you must wait to reapply for admission in the Fall 2011 MARA cohort.

Read your course syllabus/greensheet. Although instructors have no requirement to post their syllabus (greensheet) before the first day of class, many choose to do so. You may be able to access your course syllabus early to find out how the course will be run, what the assignments are, etc. If your class syllabi aren't posted yet, you can check again at a later date; meanwhile, you can read the Fall 2009 semester syllabi (look for the MARA classes at the bottom of the list). |

Obtain your class textbooks. About 6 - 8 weeks before classes begin, you will be able to find out what textbooks (if any) are required for your classes. On the Fall 2010 Textbook Selections page, choose the courses for which you have been registered. Your courses will begin with "mara". For example, if you have been registered in MySJSU for MARA 200-10, look for mara 200-10 in the Textbook Selections. |

New Student Technology Workshop: Online Social Networking, Technology and Tools. We will introduce you to the technologies you'll be using in your classes in this workshop that begins before the semester begins. You will be added to the ANGEL course site and will have four weeks in which to finish the material. Information will be sent to you on July 28 via MySJSU. The new technology workshop is scheduled to begin August 2, 2010.

Prepare for Elluminate Welcome Session. A one-hour welcome session is scheduled for Tuesday, August 17, 2010, to get you started with MARA. This welcome session will be held on the Elluminate Web conferencing platform. You will need to read through the Student Guide to Using Elluminate, get yourself set up, and take an Elluminate training session earlier than August 17 so that you can participate in the welcome session. |

Monitor MySJSU (http://my.sjsu.edu) regularly. Students use their MySJSU Student Center web page to view messages, receive class-specific ANGEL access codes, handle payments, view grades, etc. Please log on to your MySJSU account regularly and check it for messages from the University and from your instructors, especially in the week before classes begin. |

Set up a SLISLife account (see SLISLife tutorials). SLISLife is a social networking place for SLIS students and faculty. Take a look at some of the postings, begin to get a taste of the school, and become part of our SLIS student and faculty social networking community. There is a special group for MARA. |

Bookmark the SLIS21 blog. We use this blog as another way for getting information out to students. It deals mostly with current registration or curriculum issues, and students may also ask questions and get them answered.
Note: You can subscribe to an RSS feed (see RSS explained) to receive the latest SLIS21 blog updates as they occur.
