Dr. Anthony Bernier
Assistant Professor
Before joining the faculty, Dr. Bernier served as Director of Young Adult Services for the Oakland Public Library, prior to that for 10 years as YA Specialist for the L.A. Public Library. Beyond designing and implementing a variety of recognized outreach and programming models, Dr. Bernier developed the original service and space plan for the first public library space designed exclusively for YAs: LAPL's acclaimed TeenS’cape. In 2008 he received an IMLS National Leadership Grant to advance his research on developmentally-appropriate YA spaces. He continues to consult with architects and public agencies on library space design.
From a critical youth studies perspective Dr. Bernier's research explores public space equity and the administration of library services with young people. Currently chair of the ALISE Youth Services Special Interest Group, he is former chair of YALSA's New Directions Task Force, and serves as a YALSA Serving the Underserved instructor. Dr. Bernier received his Ph.D. from UC Irvine where his doctoral dissertation focused on changing notions of public space in 20th century America. He lives in Oakland and rides a Honda Nighthawk 750.
