Dr. Joni Richards Bodart

Assistant Professor

Dr. Joni Richards Bodart has been with SLIS since 2006, and is in charge of the Youth Librarianship career path. She has published 19 books on young adult literature, including two series on booktalking, which are considered to be the standard for the field. Her most recent title, Radical Reads 2: Working with the Newest Edgy Titles for Teens, focuses on the newest and most controversial fiction titles for teens, and is designed to help librarians and teachers use and defend these important titles. Her next book, Here be Monsters: The Psychology of Supernatural Monsters in Fiction for Teens, examining reasons for their popularity, will be out in 2011, followed by Human Monsters and Mental Illness in YA Fiction. Her research interests also include disconnected youth, adolescent culture, and how changes in social networking software have impacted how YA authors communicate with their readers and the influence that has had on their writing. She is also the winner of the 2010 Scholastic Library Publishing Award, formerly the Grolier Award, given annually to a youth librarian whose "extraordinary contributions to promoting access to books and encouraging a love of reading for lifelong learning exemplifies outstanding achievement in the profession."
