Dr. Scott J. Simon

Lecturer

Dr. Scott Simon is a musician and an Information Scientist from the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of South Florida. He completed studies in both Music Performance and Music Information Retrieval while earning his Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Information Science in 2005 at the University of North Texas.

Dr. Simon combines his background in music performance and information technologies in his exploratory, innovative research. In addition, Dr. Simon has also garnered much praise for his passionate and articulate guitar work (available online at shell.cas.usf.edu/~ssimon).

Dr. Simon is teaching an online graduate course in Music Informatics for SLIS San José State. The course provides an overview of the field of Music Informatics (MI) including major researchers and research articles, as well as technical, social, and cognitive issues such as the digital revolution in music and the latest music information retrieval systems. The changing role of music distribution with the use of digital music formats (MP3s), podcasting, and portable media players (iPODs) will be examined as well.
