Lori Lindberg chairs a program and presents at first Archival Education and Research Institute

Lecturer Lori Lindberg received full funding to attend the first Archival Education and Research Institute (AERI) at UCLA from July 6-11, 2009. A member of the program committee for this premiere event, Lori performed dual roles at the Institute, chairing one session of research paper presentations and presenting at another. This was the first of four annual institutes featuring faculty and doctoral students in Archival Science, funded by a four-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services' Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. The broad and ambitious agenda for AERI encompasses the major areas of the academic endeavor in Archival Science: curriculum development, thesis writing, publishing, grant writing, and career development. Curriculum development in Archival Studies and its advancement in the university is a significant goal of AERI.

A week-long institute, AERI is a singular opportunity for current and incoming doctoral students in Archival Science to interact with faculty from a number of institutions, have their research be heard in a constructive critical environment and receive advice and mentoring regarding research and potential careers as archival educators and academics. In addition, the presence of international faculty and students provides an opportunity to discover a sampling of archival research and education currently occurring outside the United States, fostering a cross-pollination of ideas and encouraging potential collaborations. From the AERI website: "The primary goal of AERI is to promote the growth of a new generation of academics in archival education who are both versed in contemporary issues and knowledgeable of the work being conducted by colleagues." To be eligible to attend the Institute, one must be an incoming or continuing doctoral student, a recent PhD graduate, or faculty currently engaged in research and teaching activity. Attendees came from both U.S. and international institutions.

Lindberg has been a SLIS lecturer teaching archives seminars for SJSU SLIS since 2002. She is full-time faculty and teaches in the SLIS MARA (Master's Degree in Archives and Records Administration) program.
