Dr. Anthony Bernier publishes a feature article on young adult space in Public Libraries

Photo of Anthony BernierDr. Anthony Bernier, SLIS assistant professor, has published "A space for myself to go:" Early patterns in small YA spaces" in the September/October 2009 issue of Public Libraries. From the abstract: Since the first purpose-built young adult (YA) library space opened in the mid-1990s libraries have slowly begun to adopt YA spaces as a new standard of excellence. This study, representing the first empirical research on the topic, examines the profiles and surveys of ten libraries enacting relatively small YA spaces to extract some early patterns and identify larger implications for the field. The study finds that on the one hand these libraries devote a wide array of resources to their YA spaces as well as invite youth participation in the design process, it also finds that libraries continue to dedicate a proportionately small amount of space to young adults and demonstrates the need for establishing more sophisticated methodological practices in executing, measuring, and evaluating these spaces.
