Photo of Rachel Clarke Rachel Clarke wins 2007 Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship from SLA.

Student Rachel Clarke was recently awarded the 2007 Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship by the Southern California Chapter of the Special Libraries Association. Clarke is a member of the Society of American Archivists and the American Society for Information Science and Technology, and she plans to use her scholarship award to attend her first SLA conference this June in Denver.

I am pleased and extremely honored to be the recipient of the 2007 Karen Sternheim Scholarship. Special libraries and special collections have interested me since I began studying library and information science. I feel that the scholarship will help in more ways than just tuition; it has already offered me the opportunity to meet and network with other amazing people in the field. I am looking forward to attending the SLA conference in Denver this summer.

Photo of Dr. Mengxiong Liu Dr. Mengxiong Liu receives Fulbright Senior Specialist Award to travel to Uruguay.

Part-time faculty member, Dr. Mengxiong Liu, Engineering Librarian at King Library has been selected for a Fulbright Senior Specialists project in Uruguay at Latin American Center for Human Economy (CLAEH) and The British Schools during the month of November 2007.

I’m very excited about this opportunity. This Fulbright award gives me an opportunity of sharing my expertise and communicating with the information and library science scholars and professionals in Uruguay. The project requires that I advise, recommend and evaluate the design and structure of the postgraduate degree in management of digital resources at the Latin American Center for Human Economy (CLAEH) and the information literacy program at the British Schools. I will also give seminars on topics focusing on digital libraries and information literacy to an audience of postgraduate students, librarians, information technology specialists, and educators at the secondary and tertiary level within the community.

Uruguay has slowly been working on national strategies that encourage citizens to increase their functional and cognitive digital competencies in the new context of an emerging knowledge society. Most educational policies are just starting to address these issues but there is still much room for change and progress in this area. Over the last few years over 350 libraries in the country have started to plan for the hybrid model of becoming both traditional and virtual libraries. A relatively small number have automated their collections and generated access to electronic documents and multimedia materials. There are several economic, political and cultural barriers to developments and projected innovations in this area. It is within this context that both CLAEH and The British Schools would like to collaborate to generate greater awareness of the importance of information literacy nationwide.

I feel Fulbright offers a dynamic and potential-laden opportunity for U.S. scholars to network with our counterparts throughout the world. I hope to become a positive cultural ambassador in promoting mutual understanding between American and Uruguay professionals.

Photo of Milena Seyes Milena Seyed wins scholarship to attend ACRL National Conference.

Student Milena Seyed won an ACRL Library Student Scholarship to attend the 13th National Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, March 29th to April 1st, 2007. Upon winning the award, Seyed said:

This will be my first professional conference and I am looking forward to learning more about online instruction, information literacy, and Web site usability. I would like to thank my adviser, Debbie Faires, SLIS director, Dr. Ken Haycock, and Taft College Library director, Dr. Mimi Collins, for their help and support.

After the conference, Seyed had this to say:

The conference was highly informative, positively thought provoking, inspiring, and enjoyable. Baltimore is a truly charming city that the librarians and students loved to explore. As a bonus, scholarship recipients had several special privileges during the conference, such as reserved front seats during luncheons and keynote sessions, and even breakfast in our honor. I would like to encourage all SLIS students who consider a career in academic libraries to apply for an ACRL scholarship for the next conference, planned for March 2009 in Seattle, Washington.
