Student Carrie Sieh Creates Series of Video Tutorials
Carrie Sieh, who will earn her MLIS in December, has been working for almost a year as an Information Specialist at the University of Miami Library's Education and Outreach Department. Over the summer, she led a team of three library staff members in creating a series of video tutorials to help users understand library services and resources. (www.library.miami.edu/vlib/)
The videos cover such topics as a basic overview of the library’s website; how to find a book or article by title, topic or author; how to read a call number; finding textbooks or DVDs and videos; how to use the interlibrary loan service; and how to establish and utilize a personal library account.
The project began with brainstorming to come up with a list of potential subjects. This original list of about 50 titles was then whittled down to 15 that covered those topics most frequently asked about by students. Next came a rigorous process of scripting and storyboarding. "There was a lot of prep work," says Sieh. She was responsible for all recording, editing, voice narration and production of the videos, as well as facilitating communication between the project group and administration and other library staff.
Sieh learned how to use Camtasia Studio 5 for the project, which she found to be "fun to use." Although she has an artistic background as a painter, she had never attempted anything like the video project before.
There are currently 10 videos available, with more coming soon. The videos may be used by students who visit the library website, where they can choose to view only specific topics as needed or all of the videos for a fuller orientation experience. Some librarians are also incorporating the video tutorials into their live information literacy classes.
Sieh is also in charge of the web page that houses the video tutorials, utilizing her basic HTML skills to manage the page. When she is not working on special projects such as the video tutorials, Sieh spends her time at the reference desk.
