Beta Phi Mu

Beta Phi Mu was founded in 1948 to recognize and encourage scholastic achievement among library and information studies students. The motto, Aliis inserviendo consumor, meaning "Consumed in the service of others", was selected by the founders based on the concept of the dedication of librarians and other information professionals to the service of others. Eligibility for membership in Beta Phi Mu is by invitation of the faculty from an American Library Association accredited professional degree program.

The SJSU School of Library and Information Science Beta Phi Mu chapter is called the Omega chapter. Each year by the last day in March the faculty will nominate eligible students from the previous calendar year SLIS graduates. This means that students who graduated in calendar year 2011 will be nominated and notified in March–April 2012.

Those students who accept the nomination may choose to be inducted into Beta Phi Mu either at ALA in the summer or at CLA in the fall, or "in absentia" at either of those times and places.
