Chicago Chapter, Black Caucus of ALA:
Charlemae Hill Rollins Scholarship

The Charlemae Hill Rollins Scholarship was established by the Chicago Chapter in 1982. The Scholarship is named in memory of the outstanding African American children's librarian, writer, lecturer, and educator, Charlemae Hill Rollins (1897 - 1979). Mrs. Rollins was children's librarian in the George C. Hall Branch of the Chicago Public Library from January, 1932 to July, 1963, when she retired.

The scholarship is funded by the Chicago Chapter, Black Caucus of the ALA, and individuals. It is administered by the Scholarship Committee of the Chicago Chapter, Black Caucus of the ALA and is non-renewable.

Deadline: December 1, 2009

Eligibility: Applicants who have been accepted or attend a formal program of library education leading to a master's degree at an ALA– accredited program may apply for the scholarship. Two major factors are considered in awarding the Scholarship:

  1. academic excellence; and
  2. student statement (essay)

Applicants must be African American and legal residents of the Chicago Metropolitan Area.

Applicants must submit the following materials:

  2. Resume.
  3. Complete Transcripts of all colleges and graduate study.
  4. Three letters of recommendation on the attached form. [ChicagoChapter.doc]

All materials, including letters of recommendation and transcripts, must be postmarked by the deadline. An interview may also be required of the applicants.
