Getting Started – Students

Welcome to SLISLife, a social networking environment for San Jose State University SLIS students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

To register for an account, you will need to visit the SLISLife homepage: slislife.spartasocialnetworks.com/.

SLISLife Home

In the column on the right side of the screen, you will see a gray box with the words "New Member? Sign up now." Clicking on this box will bring you to the initial registration page.

Groups Homepage

To register, you will first need to choose a User ID. This can be your name or some other handle of your choice. You will have to pick a password, and enter your e-mail address and birthdate. No-one will see the year – it can be phony if you wish. The purpose of the day is to enable people to wish you Happy Birthday!

The final field on the registration page asks you to select your user type. Select "Student/Alumni" from the dropdown box. Read and agree to the terms of service, then click "Proceed."

You will now move on to creating your profile.

You will be taken through a series of pages soliciting different types of information. You may choose how much or how little information you choose to enter – there are few required fields. It is recommended that you fill out the first page, which solicits a basic description of yourself, in its entirety. To move from page to page use the continue and previous buttons at the bottom.

The second page requests contact information. If you have IM, Skype, or Second Life accounts, you can post your screen names here so that other students will be able to reach you.

The next page will ask you about your work. List your jobs in reverse chronological order.

Following that, you will be asked about your pre-SLIS education. Please list schools attended in reverse chronological order.

The next page is for personal information. You do not have to fill out every field, but please offer some information about yourself, such as your favorite books and movies, so students with similar interests can connect with you.

Student Personal

Finally, you will see a page asking about your progress in SLIS. List your program start date, current courses, completed courses, and when you expect to complete the program.
